Position Summary

The Director of Faculty Affairs develops, monitors and maintains policies and procedures related to the faculty recruitment lifecycle. Provides oversight, guidance and support to the SPH Office of Faculty Affairs related to operations and administration of faculty programs, policies and procedures, including design and implementation of administrative systems and processes and policies, as well as non-tenure track teaching staff as applicable. Serves in an advisory capacity to the dean and associate vice dean of faculty affairs on all matters related to the faculty lifecycle, such as searches, appointments, promotions, tenure, etc. Prepares and issues faculty contracts and related correspondence and maintains all faculty records. Develops and maintains departmental strategic plans and budget. Hires and directs support staff. Responsible for communication and logistical support to key faculty committees.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Office of Faculty Affairs

  • Directs the organization and action of Office of Faculty Affairs, to include: 
    • Develops mechanism for and maintains all faculty affairs-related reporting, including both standard and ad hoc – such as tenure tracking/outcomes, searches, forecasting and planning, historical trends, productivity, budget, etc.
  • Works closely with associate vice dean and dean on faculty-related annual budget and salary planning.  Tracks expenses, procurements and reimbursement to ensure strategic utilization of resources.
  • Activity Insight/Faculty Success Administration:
    • Serves as the Activity Insight/Faculty Success administrator and point of contact for the program database.
  • Regularly updates the faculty affairs website, through SharePoint, to assure accuracy. Keeps updated faculty roster and administrative records including sabbaticals.
  • Works with the Associate Dean of Strategic Initiatives and Chief of Staff to plan all faculty meetings.

Faculty Development & Evaluation (Annual Review) and Promotions and Tenure process management.

  • Oversees the planning, coordination, and support of the annual reviews for all faculty and manages all faculty promotions. 
    • Supervises and reports on all tenure-related issues such as tenure tracking, promotion, and reappointment.
    • Advises on tenure policies and procedures/analysis. Consults on departmental policies, procedures, and requirements. Assesses and approves all affiliated titles.
    • Submits tenure cases to the Provost for review on behalf of the Dean in accordance Board of Trustees meeting timelines. 
    • Works in collaboration with the business office to ensure that all schedules and documentation are consistent, and faculty information is updated through Central HR and Activity Insight (faculty reporting system). 
    • Promotion and Tenure Committee - Oversees the support of the P&T Committee on with Promotion and Tenure cases, Professor Promotion Cases and Distinguished Professors with Tenure Cases.

Faculty Development Program Coordination

  • Fosters communication and assists in facilitating policies, procedures and interests related to faculty professional development. 
    • Develops faculty leaves and time off policies; advises on eligibility and applicability of sabbaticals, leaves, and competitive fellowship awards; works with dean, associate vice dean and faculty on planning, funding and related; addresses non-academic time-off.
    • Works with dean to navigate personnel status changes such as retention, termination, and retirement; consults with and advises individual faculty.
    • Assists the ADFR by designing, implementing and assessing a comprehensive program of faculty development to assist faculty at all career stages.
    • Searches for opportunities to increase leadership roles for women and under-represented minorities. 
    • Develops and distributes communications around faculty development activities.
    • Oversees development of faculty development events, workshops, programs, seminars, learning communities and conferences designed to improve teaching and learning.

Faculty Community Building Activities

  • Organizes stratiegic activites designed to foster community among school faculty through invited Lecturers, Brown Bags, faculty lunches, faculty committees/task forces and the faculty retreat.

Faculty Mentoring

  • Creates a program of mentoring for Assistant Professors. Coordinates discussions with the Associate Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and the Junior Faculty about their mentoring needs and helps guide the faculty member toward the selection of appropriate senior facu
