Job Description

AECOM is position available for a Construction Engineering Technician – Freight Rail / Transportation to join our Class I Railroad Team in Chicago, IL. This individual may report out of AECOM’s Chicago, IL office or may work remotely from any Chicago area or Northwest Indiana location.  

The appropriately qualified applicant shall demonstrate experience in construction inspection, engineering design, or project management. Experience with Class I Railroads is preferred but not required.  Note: This is a part-time field position with varying weekly hours, reliant upon workload.

The responsibilities of this position include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • On-site monitoring of operations conducted by outside parties and their contractors for conformance with railroad requirements and approved contractor means and methods.
  • Working with task leaders to deliver our scope of services to the client throughout the construction phase of Public Improvements Projects from project kickoff through project closeout.
  • Coordinating with Public Improvement project sponsors, contractors, and client personnel to help deliver our scope of services to the client.
  • Maintaining accurate project records and being accountable for successful and timely delivery of project documentation (i.e. field reports and meeting minutes) while upholding the quality standards of AECOM and the client.
  • Assisting task leaders with managing of the engineering, administration, and financial tasks for a current General Engineering Contract (GEC) with the railroad.
  • Interacting with a multi-disciplinary team comprised of track, structures, geotechnical, signals, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and civil engineers and scientists.
  • Conducting civil and structural engineering related tasks which have a well-defined scope.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements;

  • High School diploma plus (2) two years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • This is a field position that requires travel in and around the NW Indiana area and Chicago-Metro areas 
  • As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass AECOM's Motor Vehicle Records review.  Valid Driver’s License required to visit project sites and/or client locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years of relevant experience is preferred
  • Experience with Class I Railroads is desired
  • Previous experience in construction inspection, engineering design, or project management is helpful
