Colby is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and has 32 intercollegiate sports that compete at the Division III level. The department also includes the campus recreation program and hosts a variety of club and intramural sports. More than one-third of Colby’s 2,200 students participate in intercollegiate sports and, in total, nearly three-quarters are involved in fitness and recreation activities.

The College is home to a state-of the art athletics complex which is among the best Division III facilities in the country. The 350,000 square-foot athletics center includes an indoor track and field competition center, aquatic center with Maine’s first 50-meter pool, squash center, gymnasium, hockey arena, strength and fitness center, training rooms, and coaching suites. Additionally, the College opened a 70-plus acre gleaming new competition and recreation fields that are among the finest outdoor venues in Division III. Located in central Maine, the College has incredible access to other outdoor venues such as the Belgrade Lakes and Sugarloaf Mountain Resort, one of the premier ski destinations on the east coast.

The Colby College Department of Athletics is seeking an assistant women’s hockey coach beginning September 1, 2026 and ending June 30, 2027. The assistant coach’s responsibilities include assisting the head coach in all duties involved in running a competitive Division III program.

The hiring rate for this position $4,351.24 per month.

Essential Functions

To be successful in this position, an individual should be able to perform the essential duties and bring the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities that support the role. This list of duties is intended to be representative rather than exhaustive, and additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

  • On-site coaching in games and practices, including organization and implementation of daily practices

  • Prepare film breakdown and analysis, and present analysis to team members

  • Plan and prepare for games

  • Provide support and encouragement to student athletes, including academic counseling and advising

  • Monitor academic progress of athletes

  • Recruit and retain talented athletes successfully

  • Research academic and athletic credentials

  • Build relationships with prospective student athletes and their families through email, phone calls, and one-on-one meetings.

  • Organize and implement recruit visits.

  • Understand NCAA rules, compliance, and laws

  • Ensure safety and well-being of student athletes

  • Serve as an effective role model for College age students

  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the program

  • Provide effective communication to the head coach

  • Collaborate effectively with other Department of Athletics’ team members

  • Assist with the coordination of team travel

  • Position will have a secondary assignment within the department

Position Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience

  • Previous experience coaching and/or competing at the collegiate level is highly desirable

  • Committed to the values of a liberal arts education

  • Working knowledge of rules and regulations governing collegiate football

  • Outstanding organizational, communication, writing, interpersonal, and analytical skills and the capacity to work effectively in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and to exercise sound judgement and discretion

  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering

  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements

  • Ability to travel for team practices, competition, and scouting in and out of state

  • Strong positive communication and interpersonal skills with all levels

  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the development of student athletes from varied backgrounds.
