Position Summary

The Tax Counsel is responsible for providing tax advisory services to all clients and DMA’s transaction tax offices as well as supporting the  organization in other legal or tax matters when requested.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide Tax Advisory Services to external clients
  • Prepare and file refund claims, protests, and administrative appeals with taxing jurisdictions throughout the United States, including the coordination and communication of tax matters with all parties involved in those administrative proceedings
  • Represent clients at informal conferences or formal administrative hearings before taxing authorities
  • Provide Tax Advisory Services to internal clients
  • Aid all consultants by providing research and legal analysis and creating memorandums to support clients’ claims
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory tax changes as they effect DMA and its clients and advise clients on the implementation of those changes
  • Submit open records requests to governmental entities on behalf of consultants

 

Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Attend advisory and association meetings as the representative of DMA, specifically the Texas Taxpayers and Research Association (TTARA) as well as the Texas Comptroller Tax Advisory and Policy meetings.
  • Make presentations at tax conferences to enhance DMA’s credibility and brand
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Education and Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor degree required
  • 7+ years’ experience performing tax law and/or working in an accounting firm or tax jurisdiction
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products
  • Excellent problem solving, research, computer, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Persuasive writing skills required
  • Ability to work independently; must be a self-starter
  • Highest standard of integrity and business controls
  • Strong analytical skills and critical thinking required
  • Travel as required (between10-15%, approximately)
