JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Biochemistry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scholar. This position conducts experimental research in a microbiology laboratory to do basic research in tick-host-pathogen interactions in mouse models of infection and to develop vaccines and diagnostic assays for Lyme disease and Leptospirosis.
- Conducts research activities across multiple projects while coordinating timelines, materials, and deliverables.
- Performs core study tasks (experimental setup, sample handling, data capture) and maintains continuity across study phases.
- Coordinates study logistics (scheduling, materials readiness, documentation, sample tracking) with the research team and collaborators.
- Performs laboratory workflows supporting ongoing studies and collects associated research data.
- Maintains accurate experimental records and source documentation; ensures raw data are organized and retrievable.
- Develops and optimizes procedures and QC practices; documents updates as protocols evolve.
- Analyzes and interprets experimental and study datasets; produces figures, summaries, and internal reports.
- Applies appropriate statistical and computational approaches (e.g., modeling, trend analysis, integration of covariates) to support study conclusions and ongoing research activities.
- Drafts and contributes to reports, abstracts, manuscripts, and other written scientific materials.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: Doctoral Degree.
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years in biomedical research (postdoctoral or equivalent) in microbiology, immunology, infectious disease (Lyme/tick-borne preferred), including experimental design, data collection/analysis, and scientific writing.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of core microbiology, molecular biology, and basic immunology methods.
Ability to perform research under BSL-2 conditions and follow biosafety procedures and documentation requirements.
Ability to work with mice and follow approved protocols and maintain accurate study records.
Skill in data and record management, including accurate experimental documentation and organization of research data.
Ability to work with limited supervision and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Skill in troubleshooting and QC with the ability to implement routine controls and maintain data quality.
Skill in scientific communication with the ability to work effectively with a research team and collaborators.
Ability to learn and adapt techniques to available instrumentation and established workflows.
Skill in basic data analysis with the ability to interpret results and summarize findings.
