GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:
The Psychiatric Clinician is responsible for providing independent psychiatric consultation in the SARMC Boise/Eagle Emergency Department. Must be able to demonstrate the skill set to gather critical care information from treatment teams, define the purpose, type and scope of clinical intervention and satisfy the care challenges to enable appropriate treatment. This position requires autonomy and strong decision-making to adequately assess patient risk by conducting a thorough risk assessment to determine imminent risk.
The Psychiatric Clinician must have experience working with individuals and their family members providing crisis intervention and appropriate delivery of services, in addition to insight into level of care recommendations, and/or assistance with accessing community services. Must have experience in the assessment of psychiatric and substance use disorders across the lifespan, and working knowledge of diagnostic criteria for mental health disorders in accordance with the DSM-5. Must possess in-depth, working knowledge navigating the involuntary commitment process, as set forth by Idaho Statute. The Psychiatric Clinician works within a multidisciplinary team, to include: Emergency Physicians, Emergency and/or Behavioral Health Nursing Staff, Psychiatry, and community mental health/medical providers.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling or PhD in Psychology required. Idaho Clinical Professional License with independent practitioner credential, LCSW/LCPC credential or equivalent designation required. Five years post-graduate degree experience in a related mental health setting or hospital preferred. Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers certification from either AHA, ARC or the Military Training Network is required at hire in all units, unless currently certified in ACLS and/or PALS as defined in the SAHS Certification Crosswalk. Other certifications may be required as identified in the SAHS Certification Crosswalk.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organization's Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions. Demonstrates knowledge and skills to competently care for all assigned age groups (Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric as applicable). Demonstrate the skill set to gather critical care information from treatment teams, define the purpose, type and scope of clinical intervention and satisfy the care challenges to enable appropriate treatment Conducts in-person, telemedicine or phone screening assessment of new patients, including adult, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients to determine if a psychiatric emergency medical condition exists.
Provides crises intervention as needed. Communicates assessment and transfer recommendations to doctors and nursing staff, obtaining consult assistance and stabilizing care as appropriate, and conforms to all applicable EMTALA requirements. Responsible for facilitating admissions to all behavioral health programs for potential new patients, providing mental health screenings by phone, telemedicine and in person, in consultation with patients, families, medical staff and community service providers; and for providing education to patients and families regarding screening outcomes, diagnostic criteria for psychiatric illness, treatment options and recommendations for appropriate level of care. Recommends referrals when appropriate to alternate community programs and facilitates access to those programs.
Educates and informs patients and families in regard to transfer costs, financial arrangements and payment options. Responds appropriately to telephone inquiries for behavioral health services, providing accurate program and community resource information, and addresses customer complaints with supervision.
