About the position
The Safety and Occupational Health Specialist ensures that the contracted workforce complies with health and safety laws and regulations. They provide overwatch to daily operations supporting the Navy Medical Readiness Logistic Command (NMRLC) Expeditionary Medical Systems (EXMEDS) mission to ensure workplace safety and overall employee wellbeing. The position requires a detail-oriented and highly proficient individual that can adhere to published standards and guidance directed in local Standard Operating Procedures, Navy guidelines, and Department of Defense publications.
Key Responsibilities
• Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure they follow safety standards and government regulations.
• Carry out safety training programs to educate employees about workplace safety, accident prevention, and health regulations.
• The candidate will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and managing comprehensive environmental health and safety programs to protect employees
• Conduct health programs to recognize, evaluate, and control occupational hazards and environmental risks.
• Identify hazardous conditions and implement corrective actions, including protective measures and revised work procedures
• Investigate accidents or incidents to determine causes and handle workers’ compensation claims.
• Develop and implement health and safety plans and programs.
• Deliver employee training and enforce use of personal protective equipment
• Recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work conditions.
• Compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to occupational illnesses and accidents.
• Conduct audits to evaluate the effectiveness of health and safety programs and policies.
• Prepare reports on health and safety activities for management review.
• Experience with hazard identification, risk assessment, and safety program implementation.
• Coordinate with engineers or physicians to institute control or remedial measures for hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
• Strong Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA and regulatory standards
• Must possess and current valid driver’s license.
• Knowledge of safety and occupational health principles, practices, procedures, and standards.
• Successful completion of a Navy approved Mishap Investigation training course
• Knowledge of environmental concepts, principles, and practices.
• Familiarity with chemical, biological, and ecological concepts and the skill to adapt the practices where relevant guidance is not established.
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements for hazardous waste management and disposal.
• Knowledge of job hazard analysis and other analytical techniques sufficient to perform mishap investigations and to identify casual factors through interviews, study of the sequence of mishap events and environmental circumstances and by review of contractor training records.
• Skill in devising innovative safety procedures to minimize potential for injury or property damage resulting from production activities and equipment operations.
• Knowledge of safety training concepts and be able to train contractor personnel in safety concepts and safe work practices.
Physical and Special Requirements
• Ability to work at an accelerated pace under emergencies or operational demands.
• Candidate must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Requirements include walking, standing, reaching, bending, and moving items.
• Required to lift and carry weight over 45 pounds.
• Must be able to work in an Austere environment.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental health & safety, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
