Job Description

The right team is more than an advantage; it’s a game changer!  We are seeking an entrepreneurial, dynamic, innovative, and quality-oriented Senior Engineering Technician (Fire Protection) to join our team of professionals!

Coffman Engineers is seeking an individual who is passionate about their craft, wants to work on a high-functioning team, and looking for an environment that promotes professional growth. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, have a desire to work and grow with a multi-discipline engineering team, and be willing to have fun.   

Your primary focus would be providing our clients with design and consulting related to fire protection systems, including automatic sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire pump systems, clean agent fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, and mass notification systems.  A secondary focus of this position includes other aspects of fire protection engineering including life-safety code analysis, egress analysis, fire resistant construction analysis, smoke control analysis and special inspection, as well as general fire protection and life safety concepts and research.

The position is hybrid where the staff are in-person three days a week (minimum) and have the option to work remotely two days a week. While this position is hired out of our Oakland office with an occasional request to come in, the candidate will mainly be working in the greater Sacramento region.

In this Role You Will: 

  • Be a positive contributor to overall office and department goals, culture, and morale. 
  • Utilize computer skills necessary for daily activities, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, simple graphics, fire suppression design software, and a working knowledge of computer aided drafting. 
  • Manage day-to-day contacts with internal and external clients while utilizing experience and technology to meet expectations. 
  • Perform research and documentation for internal and external distribution. 
  • Analyze existing fire protection systems; design new fire protection systems including water-based suppression systems, special suppression systems, fire alarm and mass notification systems. 
  • Assess and interpret building and fire codes. 
  • Utilize project management skills for managing internal projects as well as external client.
  • Attend and participate in local and national professional organizations, such as SFPE.

Compensation and Benefits 

  • Approximate Base Salary – $100,000 -120,000 annually based on experience. 
  • Paid overtime at 1.0 times hourly rate. 
  • Competitive end of year discretionary bonus based on company/team/personal performance. 
  • Hybrid Work Schedule (subject to change). 
  • 401k with maximum of 5% Contribution Matching for 9% Employee Contribution. 

Qualifications

  • Associates degree (A.S.) from accredited college or university in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Sciences, or related engineering field preferred. Other higher education degree or certifications also considered.
  • NICET level III / IV, or ability to obtain a NICET III/IV certification.  
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in the fire protection engineering/consulting profession.  
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience coordinating with a multi-discipline design team 
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam, and AutoCAD and Revit 
  • Proficiency in AutoSPRINK, SprinkCAD, or similar fire sprinkler design software
  • Proficiency in managing CAD / REVIT production efforts.
  • Experience designing fire protection systems including suppression systems, special suppression systems, fire pumps and performing analysis of existing fire protection systems 
  • Experience with the Inspection, Testing and Maintenance requirements of fire suppression systems
  • Practical knowledg
