About the Department:
The Office of the Provost is the primary central administrative unit for the university’s academic programs. Its range of interests include curriculum, instructional personnel, assessment, accreditation, international initiatives, and oversight of the overall academic mission. Within the Office of the Provost, the Office of Undergraduate Education manages undergraduate academic programs that stretch across all colleges and schools at George Mason University. These include university-level curriculum approval, general education (Mason Core), University Studies programs, the Office of Academic Advising, and Mason Impact initiatives that support transformational learning for undergraduate students, including the Office of Student Creative Activities and Research (OSCAR), Office of Community Engagement and Civic Learning (CECiL), and Office of Fellowships. About the Position:
The University Internships Program Manager plays a key role in strengthening the Mason Internship Network by establishing efficient systems and processes for coordination among faculty, staff, and industry partners, enhancing and overseeing relevant data collection, supporting faculty in creating more structured experiential learning curricula that include internships and other work-based learning experiences, and increasing student awareness of and engagement in such experiences. This position is in the Office of Undergraduate Education and reports directly to the Senior Associate Provost of Undergraduate Education, with a dotted reporting line to the Executive Director of University Career Services in University Life. The Program Manager works closely with both individuals in executing strategies to increase the number of available internships, as well as student awareness of and engagement in internships as part of their education.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate George Mason Internship Network:
- Schedules, convenes, and leads group meetings;
- Sets meeting agendas and ensures consistent communication and alignment across stakeholders;
- Oversees George Mason Internship Network listserv;
- Shares best practices in experiential learning with the George Mason community;
- Promotes V-TOP professional development scholarships and related opportunities; and
- Engages network members in training and professional development modules.
Data Collection and Reporting:
- Works with relevant offices to assess and enhance existing data collection methods aimed at assessing (a) student engagement in internships and related work-based learning experiences, (b) employer partnerships promoting such experiences, and (c) related constructs;
- Oversees data collection efforts, leveraging technology to ensure comprehensive and accurate data; and
- Ensures data collection efforts align with reporting requirements.
Employer Engagement:
- Works with industry partners to grow formal partnerships promoting internships and related work-based learning for George Mason students;
- Assists in convening relevant employer advisory boards;
- Shares employer needs with Employer Engagement Consultants in University Career Services; and
- Facilitates connections between employers and faculty teaching in relevant areas.
