Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginia. The VDH is made up a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts.

As part of the Virginia Department of Health, Hampton, and Peninsula Health Districts (HPHD) are two health districts serving the residents of the Cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, and the Counties of James City, and York.

The position supervises employees performing administrative, fiscal and/or clerical functions. Typical duties: determines priorities, schedules and reviews work; trains, counsels and formally evaluates employees including recommending and taking disciplinary action; evaluates and improves office productivity by recommending organizational changes if necessary for each office, shift or operational area supervised; interprets and implements state and local policies and procedures; assures compliance with program requirements; directly performs more complex clerical duties; collects and analyzes data.

Independently performs tasks outlined with minimum of general guidance from supervisor; asks for guidance when questions arise regarding policies, procedures or unusual situations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Considerable knowledge of and experience in program organization, ability to query and enter data into web-based database. Computer skills necessary.
• Excellent customer service and communications skills (oral and written)
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to work and contribute within collaborative relationships, including the public

Additional Considerations

• Experience supervising in a healthcare/medical setting
• Experience in patient confidentially (HIPAA)
• Comprehensive knowledge of and experience in general office practices/procedures and business math
