Job Summary


The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is responsible for preparing and maintaining the sterile field, surgical instruments, and supplies necessary for operative procedures. The CST anticipates the needs of the surgical team, assists the surgeon throughout all phases of the procedure, and ensures a safe, efficient, and sterile environment. Additional responsibilities include pre- and post-operative room cleaning and equipment preparation.

Licenses / Certifications:


Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program (CAAHEP or ABHES preferred).
Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA required.


 
BLS required


Experience:
Key Skills:


1-3 years of Surgical Technologist experience in a fast paced multi-specialty hospital or surgery center is required.
Thorough knowledge of surgical instruments, procedures, and sterile technique.


 
Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment


 
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills


 
Excellent communication and teamwork skills


 
Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon, assistants, and respond quickly







Primary Duties and Responsibilities (listed in order of importance)

Description


1
Prepare sterile supplies and instruments using sterile technique. Set up the sterile field and ensure surgical equipment is functioning properly.

Assist in positioning and prepping patients as needed for surgery.

Anticipate the needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology and how they relate to the surgical patient and procedure.

Pass supplies, equipment, and instruments during procedures. Assist with suction, suture preparation, irrigation, medication transfer (not administration), specimen handling, and retraction.

Apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, connect drains to suction apparatus, and apply dressings to closed wounds. Assist in sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating RN before, during, and after the procedure.

Perform intraoperative activation of power equipment under the authority of the physician.

Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization. Participate in room turnover and preparation for subsequent cases.

Serve as a resource to peers and assist in onboarding and training of new staff. Maintain current knowledge through continuing education and best practices in surgical technology.

Collaborate with surgical team to support patient safety and operational efficiency.

Adhere to infection control protocols and hospital policies to ensure patient and staff safety.

Maintain effective communication with the surgical team and demonstrate professionalism in high-pressure situations.

Perform additional responsibilities as delegated to support surgical team operations and patient care.
