Why This Job

The Lead Server Engineer provides technical and tactical leadership for the management of CMC’s enterprise server infrastructure which consists of approximately 2000 servers, housed within two centralized datacenters and over 150 remote office locations. As CMC’s subject matter expert for server operating systems and virtualization, the Lead Server Engineer draws heavily on a deep technical background in VMWare ESXi, the Windows Server operating system, and related hardware and software platforms. With that strong technical foundation, the Lead Server Engineer continually adds knowledge of CMC’s business and goals and ensures alignment between the tactical execution and CMC’s strategic direction.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for all topics related to Server Infrastructure, VMWare ESXi, Windows Server and related technologies
  • Champion, and actively employ, industry best practices for all related technologies
  • Provide day-to-day oversight and direction to outsource partner resources
  • Provide on call, Level 3 escalation, 7x24, for all operational issues and outages
  • Serve as an advisor and influencer to IT Infrastructure Management by assisting in the development of multi-year departmental objectives and strategic direction
  • Server as a liaison between the Infrastructure Architecture and Operations teams
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to team members
  • Adhere to the organization’s change management policies to ensure proper documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are followed
  • Serve as an escalation point for advanced troubleshooting and complex system issues, maintaining detailed documentation for operational efficiency
  • Coordinate with project managers and internal/external team members for the timely and effective delivery of compute solutions
  • Execute tasks and responsibilities beyond those listed in this job description, as necessary, to support team and organizational goals
  • Limited travel may be required

What You'll Need

  • Previous experience as a Server Engineer in a mid to large-sized corporate enterprise
  • Experience with Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity practices, including, but not limited to, system backups, data replication and testing. Specific experience with VMWare Site Recovery Manager is strongly preferred
  • Previous experience deploying and managing windows servers in Microsoft Azure or with other cloud providers
  • UNIX/Linux experience or expertise a plus
  • Knowledge of enterprise monitoring and management systems such as Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager (SCOM), SolarWinds and vRealize Operations
  • ITIL certification or experience with ITIL processes including incident; problem; release and change management
  • Expertise in scripting, including the automation of processes and tasks specific to server management
  • Five years progressive work experience supporting Windows Server platforms in a mid to large-sized corporate enterprise
  • Three years progressive work experience designing, building and supporting virtual server infrastructure with VMWare (or) an equivalent hypervisor
  • VMWare / Equivalent Hypervisor: ESXi; vCenter; vSphere; vSphere Replication; SRM; vMotion; Storage vMotion; vRealize Operations
  • Windows Server Operating System configuration and management
  • Experience in performance optimization and tuning of virtual servers at both the hypervisor and server OS level
