Consulting Director, International Environmental Specialist

ERM is seeking a motivated, part-time casual Consulting Director, International Environmental Specialist based in Washington DC or Annapolis, MD. The successful candidate will support a broad range of services in our sustainable finance sector. The specialist will conduct compliance and monitoring activities related to domestic and international projects, as well as assisting clients with environmental social and corporate governance (ESG) strategy and performance. This position focuses on providing technical support to clients such as the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Projects are often fast-paced, multi-faceted, and geographically diverse and may include oil and gas pipeline, LNG facility development, low-carbon development, solar, wind, onshore/offshore wind, extractive industries, marine infrastructure development, and general project-supporting infrastructure (e.g., roads, transmission lines). The position will require the candidate to work both independently and on project teams, and to manage varying priorities and multiple tasks to work on concurrent projects and meet project deadlines. The candidate will as a senior technical advisor to project teams advising clients on project risks and mitigants to secure financing. Spanish capabilities, as well as biodiversity expertise are a plus, and the successful candidate will have opportunities to travel internationally to remote locations for fieldwork.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- The International Environmental Director will provide a key role in supporting the development of tailor-made deliverables for Sustainable Finance and nature-based solutions.
- Conduct environmental/biodiversity due diligence and monitoring on behalf of development financial institutions for domestic and international development projects (e.g., oil and gas, power generation, electrical transmission, renewable/alternative energy, and mining projects).
- Prepare the environmental/biodiversity sections of national and international environmental and social impact assessments.
- Support the development of the environmental/biodiversity portions of corporate ESG strategies and support clients in implementing their ESG strategy.
- Perform project delivery activities such as report writing, undertaking, and organizing data collection, survey fieldwork, performing data and literature review, and developing recommendations for clients.
- Work within quality/budget/schedule expectations and scope-specific assignments.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's in Biology, environmental science, environmental finance, sustainable finance, environmental studies, engineering, or related field. Master’s degree preferred. Or equivalent experience.
- 8+ years (15+ years preferred) of consulting experience working on sustainable finance, and ideally in multi-stakeholder processes in developing countries or on projects with a focus on sustainable landscapes.
- Good understanding of international development and/or environmental policy processes.
- Experience in working with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UN Guiding Principles, or World Bank IFC Performance Standards.
- Desire to develop Sustainable Finance skills and basic subject matter expertise as it pertains to Sustainable Finance, Environmental aspects, or social aspects.
- Basic understanding of key emerging environmental and/or social-related issues as it relates to international affairs, climate change, natural resources, and/or environmental sustainability.
- Basic understanding of key regulatory environments and regulatory agencies in the United States or internationally (with a focus on Latin America).
