About the role

The Coordinator for Student Life Strategic Initiatives, reporting to the Program Director for Strategic Initiatives, enhances the student experience and supports staff development within the Division of Student Life. This role involves planning signature student events, fostering community and engagement, and leading professional growth initiatives for staff and student employees. The coordinator collaborates with campus partners, contributing to divisional goals through event management and professional development efforts. The Coordinator for Student Life Strategic Initiatives is a dynamic and multifaceted position that plays a central role in enhancing the student experience and supporting staff development within the Division of Student Life. The coordinator ensures that divisional priorities are met and that students and Division of Student Life staff are provided with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. The position requires a high level of collaboration, organization, and leadership, as well as a commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive campus environment.

  • Plan, organize, and coordinate divisional signature student events and programs, including but not limited to Tennessee Saturday Night and Torch Night
  • Coordinate a centralized recruitment and selection process for graduate assistantships within the Division of Student Life
  • Develop and implement events and programs for Careers in Student Affairs month in October
  • Work collaboratively with Student Life Communications to market and promote divisional signature student events and programs, including developing and disseminating marketing materials and engaging in tabling and other in-person promotional opportunities 
  • Utilize event management systems to schedule and promote events campus wide and assessment tools to evaluate effectiveness and satisfaction
  • Serve on the Student Life Staff Engagement and Development (SEDC) by actively engaging and/or leading divisional efforts related to professional and staff development 
  • Develop and implement divisional signature undergraduate and graduate student staff initiatives 
  • Coordinate the Vols in Student Affairs (VSA) program by recruiting students and mentors, developing and facilitating relevant workshops and/or programs, planning network opportunities throughout the academic year and for the summer internship program 
  • Serve as the point of contact for the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP)
  • Provide oversight of the divisional student staff experience by identifying student employee opportunities, work collaboratively with units to develop and implement centralized onboarding and evaluation process and to identify and develop centralized learning outcomes related to student staff employment 
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners, including but not limited to the Student Government Association, the Graduate Student Senate, the Division of Student Success, the Division of Access & Engagement, and the Graduate School to solicit student engagement in programs, services, and initiatives to enhance the student experience
  • Serve on the Student Life Calendar committee
  • Assist in the promotion, data collection, and data analysis of assessment efforts aimed at capturing feedback and insight regarding the undergraduate and/or graduate student experience 
  • Research and benchmark best practices related to student staff employment onboarding, evaluation, retention, and recognition and compile and develop reports to be used in decision making 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support divisional priorities, goals, and objectives 
  • Provide leadership and support for student staff, interns, and practicum students
  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, and performance evaluations of student staff, interns, and practicum students
  • Foster professional development and create supportive learning environment for student staff, interns, and practicum students

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree Required
  • Experience: Relevant experience with event planning/management 
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to manage multiple tasks at one time; ability to relate and interact with internal and external stakeholders; strong organizational and time management skills; ability to coordinate logistics, timelines, and resources effectively; ability to work collaboratively and to develop and maintain effective working relationships; ability to work independently to accomplish assigned goals in a timely manner; ability to demonstrate attention to details
