The Museum Site Manager oversees the daily operations of the Briscoe-Garner, a division of the Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin. This full-time position is based in Uvalde, Texas, and reports directly to the Director of Historic Sites.

About the Museum

The Briscoe-Garner Museum is dedicated to the remarkable lives of John Nance “Cactus Jack” Garner and Dolph Briscoe, both Uvalde natives and historically important political figures from Texas. The museum, a division of the Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin, is located in Uvalde, Texas. The first floor of the museum documents the life and career of “Cactus Jack” Garner, the first Texan to serve as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and as vice president of the United States. The second floor is dedicated to Dolph Briscoe who served as Texas governor from 1973 to 1979 and led a distinguished career in public service, business, and ranching.

Purpose

Direct daily museum operations, including visitor services, programming, safety, and security. Greet visitors and conduct interactive orientations and walking tours. 

Responsibilities

  • Direct daily museum operations, including visitor services, programming, safety, and security. Greet visitors and conduct interactive orientations and walking tours.  Model excellent customer service for staff and volunteers, including proactive greeting and interaction with visitors to direct them towards galleries, exhibits, and amenities.  Resolve visitor issues and complaints in a professional manner.
  • Maintain and report key performance indicators (e.g., visitation, program attendance, staffing).  Maintain a thorough knowledge of the museum’s permanent collection and temporary visiting exhibits to effectively support educational, interpretive, and visitor engagement activities.
  • Monitor the facilities and grounds, making recommendations to supervisor regarding repairs and maintenance, locating possible contractors, and evaluating the execution of those repairs when supervisor is not on site.  Coordinate annual contracts for ongoing maintenance work and create a cyclical maintenance program for building and grounds.  Take care of building maintenance during breaks or extended closure & attend to after-hours security calls.
  • Assist with staff hiring and provide input on staffing needs and structure.  Supervise museum staff, currently .5 FTE building attendant and .5 FTE administrative assistant and full-time Museum Educator. Perform essential functions of building attendant and administrative assistant in his/her absence.  Conduct employee performance evaluations.
  • Coordinate with the Museum Educator to schedule school programs and guided tours to ensure smooth communication and timely planning of education and museum activities.
  • Plan, develop, and execute all public programs and special events.  Coordinate the planning and implementation of publicity, promotion and public information programs for activities conducted at the Museum in concert with the Public Affairs Officer of the Briscoe Center.
  • Manage and update the Briscoe-Garner Museum’s Facebook page, including researching and developing engaging, relevant social media content to promote museum events, exhibitions, and historical content.  Serve as the Briscoe-Garner representative in community and city government relations and relationships and attend the meetings of those organizations to which the Briscoe-Garner Museum has institutional memberships.
  • Work with exhibits and curatorial staff of the Briscoe Center to execute museum exhibits, including research, writing, fabrication, installation, and promotion.  Oversee collections care and management as directed by the Director of Curation.
  • Process payments via ProCard and complete required financial reporting.  Create purchase orders for urgent needs, securing required approvals and documentation.
  • Occasionally travel to UT Austin campus to conduct research, to attend staff meetings, pickup/return collection materials, etc.  Adhere to established work schedule with regular attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
