The opportunity:  

This position is responsible for managing the monthly accounting entries, financial analysis, account reconciliations and reporting of IFRS and Statutory results for the company.  This role requires technical accounting and communication skills necessary to address complex accounting issues. This role is responsible for ensuring the integrity of company reporting and validating that the financial results comply with prescribed IFRS and Statutory accounting treatment, as well as OSFI Canadian requirements. This role will work closely with other departmental stakeholders.

How you will contribute: 

• Monthly financial close responsibilities and financial analysis, including accounting entries, fluctuation analysis and resolution research, account reconciliations, and balancing between source data and general ledger. This role requires the ability to provide complex income basis analysis to identify any variances that occur, analyzing reasons for the change and determining appropriate avenue of communication to leadership

• Quarterly and annual statutory legal entity reporting, including accounting entries and coordination with shared services. Participation in SOX compliance audits and work with auditors on various accounting matters

• Represent the department in various cross-organizational projects, including those related to Finance and Accounting initiatives, system changes, and process improvements.  Partner with other divisions as the Finance and Accounting subject matter expert to define and design new processes intended to streamline and improve efficiencies for the organization

• Detail oriented with knowledge of accounting principles and practices, and the ability to analyze and report financial data

• Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills to effectively communicate financial operations matters and related analysis to all levels of management

• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to complete multiple complex tasks in a timely fashion

• Ability to critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources and distinguish what additional information may be required

• Ability to identify, interpret, and analyze potential accounting risks and communicate the appropriate response

• Ability to recognize the need to proactively communicate and collaborate with others

• Requires incumbent to be self-motivated and independently work to complete multiple projects/tasks in a timely and accurate fashion

• Ability to provide metrics for business decision making

• Bachelor’s degree preferred; ideally in Accounting

• Minimum of 3 years of accounting and financial reporting experience. Experience in the insurance industry is a plus
