Overview:  

We are seeking a Technical Professional-Radioisotope Processing to support the 4501 Operations Group within the Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a to support isotope production operations.  

 

The 4501 Operations Group within the IPMD, ORNL has an immediate opening for a Radioisotope Processing Technical Professional.  We are seeking a highly motivated, organized, and talented candidate to join our growing team to work on our expanding radioisotope production demands.  Using the unique capabilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and related radiochemical and nuclear processing facilities, the groups support a variety of projects supplying difficult-to-produce radioisotopes essential for medical, research, and industrial applications. Production of these radioisotopes supports the mission of the Department of Energy (DOE) and other government agencies, as well as the needs of private organizations and institutions.  Our current focus is on production and processing research and development to stand up new production capabilities for medical and industrial radioisotopes, including Ac-225, W-188, Ba-133, Th-228, Ra-224/Pb-212, Sr-89, Se-75, Ni-63, Tc-99, and Th-229.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and support isotope production activities in a team environment in a radiological facility; including hot cell and glovebox operations.
  • Work directly with nuclear materials in hot cells, gloveboxes, and hoods to support isotope production.
  • Develop and coordinate production and processing schedules and liaise with Group Lead and technical staff in support of customer requests.
  • Assist Group Lead with strategic planning for implementation of continuous improvements.
  • Develop solutions to radioisotope processing and production challenges.
  • Engage with scientists, engineers, and technicians to establish solutions to complex problems.
  • Assist and develop quality control and quality assurance documentation as well as procedures in support of isotope production and operational excellence.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Assist with the coordination of the radioactive and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Mentor and train technicians.
  • Assist the Group Lead with other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in physical or engineering sciences and 2 years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to enable effective interaction with peers, technical and non-technical staff.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with safe handling of highly radioactive materials
  • Experience with glove box and/or remote hot cell operations
  • Experience in isotope production activities and chemical purification techniques such as ion-exchange chromatography. 
  • Experience in wet-chemistry operations
  • Experience in analytical methods such as gamma-ray spectroscopy
  • Experience in interpreting data from analytical methods such as gamma-ray spectroscopy and mass spectrometry
  • Experience in quality assurance documentation, good laboratory practice (GLP), and or current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) experience
  • Experience in a production or manufacturing environment with an emphasis on continuous improvement

 

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
