Provide pharmaceutical services to patients and medical staff at Shepherd Center with a focus on patient safety. A resident is a graduate pharmacist who is working in conjunction with preceptors and staff pharmacists while gaining practical experience in various settings. The resident is an employee of Shepherd Center and is eligible for benefits and paid time off.

SIGNIFICANT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the safe, accurate and rational distribution of pharmaceutical agents to patients of all ages, employees and designated areas of the hospital, as well as the supervision of technical personnel.  This shall be carried out in accordance with all state/federal laws, Joint Commission standards, and hospital/department policies and procedures.

  • Consistently deliver the best in customer service and patient care.  As a team member, demonstrates respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with patients, families, visitors, and other employees.

  • Champion Shepherd Center’s mission, vision, and values; complies with the policies and procedures, ethical standards and code of conduct set forth by the hospital.

  • Accurately fills medication orders.

  • Accurately enters orders and clinical information into computers and verifies physician-entered orders.

  • Accurately checks technician work. Knows how to check for inventory in Pyxis, add inventory to Pyxis, unload drug from Pyxis stations, and interpret Pyxis controlled-substances usage reports in the absence of the Director.

  • Maintains adequate control of controlled substances in the Pyxis C-II Safe.

  • Checks crash carts within four hours after technicians restock them.

  • Accurately calculates and compounds parenteral products.

  • Washes hands frequently. Uses aseptic technique without exception.

  • Enforces adherence to USP 797 guidelines.

  • Complies with all federal and state laws and hospital/department policies and procedures.

  • Adheres to highest standards of pharmacy practice and professionalism.

  • Maintains thirty (30) hours of continuing education per two years in accordance with Georgia law.

  • Prioritizes technical work for technical staff if needed.

  • Informs Director of performance or discipline problems of technical staff.

  • Provides continual guidance to technical staff as it applied to performance of pharmacy services.

  • Interacts appropriately with physicians, nurses, and other professionals in regard to appropriate drug therapy. Follows through on all inappropriate drug regimens.

  • Responds to non-formulary medication orders. Communicates with physicians, recommending appropriate formulary alternatives, and documents interaction in i-Vent.

  • Ensures that allergy information is obtained on all inpatients prior to dispensing medication.

  • Contacts physician concerning clinical drug interactions.
