Outdoor Wellness Program Mission: The OW program's mission is to provide strategic and intentional programming designed to diminish barriers to entry, create more inclusive outdoor recreation communities and develop skills for healthy and responsible participation in outdoor activities while addressing the nine dimensions of wellness.   

Position Overview: Outdoor Wellness Trip Leaders fill a vital leadership role on campus. Leaders develop, market, co-lead, and facilitate day and overnight outdoor adventures, such as canoeing, rock climbing, hiking, camping, etc. Leaders will receive significant training on wilderness skills, outdoor activity instruction, risk management, and environmental practices to reduce risks while in the field. All Outdoor Wellness Leaders will be trained in CPR/AED, First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, and attend other outdoor education training as needed. Outdoor Wellness Leaders may also receive funding to further advance their own development in something related to the program. 

Probationary Period: Please note, Outdoor Wellness Leaders will be hired on for an initial probationary period where their employment will be contingent on having a good standing with UWB/CC, meeting the minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 2.5 and maintaining a quarterly GPA of 2.5, fulfilling the responsibilities of an OWL on a consistent basis, and displaying a commitment to improving the Outdoor Wellness Program and oneself as a leader.   

Time Commitment: Being an Outdoor Wellness Leader requires a time commitment of a full academic year and an average of 12-15 hours per week.  That time is used to plan and market outdoor adventures and work with outdoor equipment in the Nest Gear Shop

Pay Rate: $20.76 per hour (July-Dec. 2025); $22.76 per hour (Jan.-June 2026); Open to Workstudy applicants. 

Responsibilities:

• Maintain a minimum of 10+ hours of work a week during the academic year.
• Attend and/or complete Core Skills Training in Summer/Fall (August 25-September 5) and any other mandatory trainings throughout the year (Outdoor Wellness Leaders will be paid for trainings) including, but not limited to:
  • All ARC Staff Trainings
  • University-wide staff and student trainings
  • Outdoor Leadership/Medical trainings (ex. CPR/AED/First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, Wildlife Awareness, etc)  
• Attend weekly team meetings.
• Coordinate with the Program Manager, Gear Shop Coordinator, and other team members to assess and improve programs for the campus community.
• Actively seek input from the student body to determine the type of events to plan throughout the year.
• Co-create, -plan, and -facilitate a diversity of outdoor and wellness related off campus excursions for the UWB/CC student body that appeal to a wide array of ages, genders, ethnicities, and interests.
• Complete required trip planning documents and tasks in a timely manner.
• Assist in advertising events to reach a diverse demographic of students/staff/faculty/community members etc.  
• Foster a safe, accessible, and inclusive space where the pursuit of responsible outdoor recreation is encouraged for all.
