Job Description

Nordstrom’s Supply Chain keeps our customers at the center of everything we do by ensuring merchandise flows quickly and reliably across our network. As a Control Systems Engineer, you will play a vital role in optimizing the performance of our automated material‑handling technologies—from conveyors and sorters to robotics and advanced control networks. Your work will directly support operational reliability and enhance the efficiency of our Distribution and Fulfillment Centers nationwide.

A Day in the Life

In this role, you will:

  • Lead troubleshooting, optimization, and continuous improvement for MHE control systems across multiple facilities.
  • Serve as the first‑level technical escalation for Controls Technicians/Leads, providing both on‑site and remote support.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot PLC/PC‑based controls, industrial networks (including Profibus, Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, AS‑i), motor/drive systems, and SCADA/HMI platforms.
  • Partner with cross‑functional teams—including Facilities, Operations, Ops IT, Engineering Services, Start‑up Teams, OEMs, Safety, and Automation Software—to implement improvements and support complex projects.
  • Monitor system performance metrics and deliver insights that help teams resolve issues and improve equipment reliability.
  • Develop and deliver technical training for Controls team members, and contribute to hiring and skill assessment processes.
  • Lead root cause analyses, incident reviews, and the creation of preventive measures and standard operating procedures.
  • Support capital project planning by acting as the technical consultant for new technologies and system upgrades.

You Own This If You Have…

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or 5+ years of equivalent professional/military experience.
  • Experience with electrical theory, automation systems, robotics, industrial controls, and automated equipment.
  • Proficiency in RSLogix/Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View, and other PLC/HMI software tools.
  • Knowledge of robotic work cells and related control architectures.
  • Hands‑on experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and modifying motor control systems (VFDs, servos, DC drives).
  • Industrial electrical experience, including 480V 3‑phase, 110 VAC, and 24VDC systems.
  • Experience interpreting and modifying mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems, KPI monitoring, and basic warehouse management system concepts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to partner across all levels of the organization.
  • Leadership experience in a technical environment.
  • Experience with ASRS systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Controls system design, logic development, and code writing experience.
  • Systems integration experience across MHE automation.
  • Background with a variety of conveyor and sortation systems (SDI, Dematic, Honeywell/Intelligrated).
  • Proven track record providing remote technical support.

Work Environment & Travel

  • Ability to support after‑hours escalation based on business needs.
  • Travel up to 40% to support sites across the Nordstrom Supply Chain network.
