Director, XR Engineering

The Opportunity

The Unity Engine is a premier platform for a variety of different interactive media experiences, ranging from console and phone games to Hollywood film CGI to cutting-edge AR/VR/XR interactive experiences. In the Unity Platform team, we make sure the Unity Engine and Editor are on every major platform where our users want to go and where real-time content is needed.  To help achieve this mission we are looking for a Director, XR Engineering to help shape our strategy and drive execution with the team. This is a senior engineering leadership role with responsibility for engineering teams split between Seattle and San Francisco. 

What you’ll be doing

The Director will execute on this mission by working closely with our industry partners to support the latest and greatest AR and VR hardware on the market. In addition, the Director will work closely with the rest of the Unity Engine and Editor teams to advance the state of the art in authoring tools and interaction models for XR in order to empower creative teams of all sizes to find success in this fast growing market.

You’ll deliver clear, concise technical roadmaps defined together with the team, product managers and external partners. You’ll create and drive the subsequent operational plan.

You and your team will closely collaborate with R&D Platforms Product Management, Project Management, Release Management as well as other key partners and collaborators across the company for timely, predictable delivery.

What you’ll be doing

• Bring senior technical leadership experience, great interpersonal and communication skills as well as excellent technical insights and strategic understanding of the real-time 3D industry, covering gaming and/or XR.
• Lead the continuous development, delivery, release and engineering progression of Unity’s XR creation and deployment features
• Be accountable as senior engineering manager for our global engineering organization of around 30 people with clear missions, ownership and accountability
• Maintain close relations and clear communication lines with internal key collaborators and partners across Unity R&D Engineering leadership, Product Management, Project  Management, Release Management, Product Marketing and Business Development.
• Own the roadmap and strategy for the foundation of all XR features and integrations at Unity

What we’re looking for

• Experience managing a medium to large, globally distributed engineering team
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Proven technical knowledge and experience working with XR and platforms (Desktop, Consoles, Mobile)
• Verifiable  architectural knowledge and experience building cross platform developer platforms, APIs, and extensibility points
