About the role

The Senior Project Lead – Operations position will be responsible for a wide range of activities in support of the Deputy Laboratory Director for Operations/Chief Operations Officer (COO), including:

  • coordinating communications to and from the COO office;

  • improving operational processes;

  • executing projects;

  • facilitating information flow and operational planning; and

  • facilitating the development of performance metrics and their application across the laboratory. 

The Senior Project Lead - Operations will assist the Deputy Laboratory Director/COO in coordinating the priorities of the laboratory’s operational directorates to meet mission needs. This individual will work closely with the Directorate Operations senior leaders to ensure an effective integration of work with the programmatic directorates.

This role will oversee daily operations and direct administrative tasks such as managing calendars, logistics, and prioritizing time and schedules. It will act as the liaison between Deputy Laboratory Director/COO and other executives, clients, and stakeholders to ensure consistent communication and engagement in critical decisions.

This role is expected to be fully on site (with some flexibility when COO is traveling or working remote).

Position Requirements

  • Experience working with Argonne and knowledge of Department of Energy and Argonne policies, procedures, processes and organizations especially in the areas of Procurement, Communications, and Safety is preferred.

  • Ability to generate content for websites, newsletters, and general informational materials.

  • Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous, and complex tasks.

  • Experience with problem definition, solution formulation, and implementation across multi-organizational programs.

  • Demonstrated success directing a team of operations, project management, and administrative staff including providing input on employee performance; setting team and individual expectations and goals; creating an inclusive environment; and focusing on development and teamwork.

  • Ability to think and work in an organized and effective manner in an environment that has rapidly shifting and often contradictory demands and priorities. Professional presence and proven track record of building and maintaining relationships with all levels of an organization.

  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative required.

  • Ability to read or prepare detailed documents, problem solve, train, reason, interact effectively with clients, handle concurrent tasks, and work with changing priorities; flexibility to abstract experience and adapt it to the situation at hand; independence, creativity, and initiative to conceptualize the organization’s business model and operating procedures, and how they may be improved; forecasting capability.

  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and resolve conflicts that may arise.

  • Experience researching, analyzing, and resolving problems or issues both independently and as a member of a team.

  • Knowledge and use of database management, spreadsheet, and work processing applications.

  • Knowledge of how to apply organizational effectiveness and process improvement methodologies.

  • Ability to think critically, using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses and the ability to seek solutions, conclusions, and approaches to problems.
