Epilepsy is a neurological condition involving the brain that makes people more susceptible to having recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Akron General’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) is a four-bed monitoring unit allowing epilepsy specialists to diagnose a seizure problem accurately and design the best possible treatment plan. As PCNA, you play an integral role in ensuring patients continue receiving the best treatment possible. You will find a welcoming and hands-on environment where caregivers encourage education, mutual support and teamwork. Each day, you have numerous opportunities to make a difference in your community.    

 

A caregiver in this position works nights from 7:00PM – 7:00AM, every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare units, patient rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer, or emergencies. 

  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.  

  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight, and height. 

  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction.  

  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. 

  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. 

  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. 

  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.  

  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.
