Summary:
The Head Coach is responsible for developing, coordinating, and leading the school’s chess program. This includes fostering a supportive and engaging environment where students build critical thinking, problem-solving, and sportsmanship skills through chess. The coach will plan and lead practices, organize competitions, and mentor players at all levels of ability.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and implement a structured practice schedule that builds students’ chess knowledge and skills.

Teach chess fundamentals, strategies, and tactics in a way that is accessible to varying levels of experience.

Foster a positive team culture that emphasizes respect, perseverance, and good sportsmanship.

Prepare students for local, regional, and state tournaments; accompany and supervise students at competitions.

Monitor academic eligibility and support the balance of athletics, academics, and character development.

Communicate regularly with parents, teachers, and administrators about schedules, progress, and expectations.

Maintain chess equipment, materials, and digital resources.

Serve as a role model and mentor for students, promoting confidence, discipline, and teamwork.
Qualifications
Education/Experience

Strong knowledge of chess rules, strategies, and competitive play.

Prior coaching, teaching, or mentoring experience preferred.

Ability to inspire and motivate middle school students.

Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
