Onsite - This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Tonawanda on a full-time basis.

The Role:

The Controls Engineer Lead for Machining will manage, lead and supervise Controls Engineers that work directly with Production & Engineering Teams maintaining and improving Manufacturing systems. The main purpose of the Lead Controls Engineer is to assign projects, deliver timing and results, schedule coverage, control business metrics of the team, and support technical deficiencies, growth and development.  The lead controls engineer has ownership and responsibility for all the controls in the machining operations.  Machining operations are 24/7 and need to be supported. 

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Lead and manage a team of Electrical Engineers.

  • Support and adhere to corporate and plant safety policies.

  • Support the day-to-day production needs on the production floor by maintaining solid relationships with the Production and Maintenance teams.

  • Provides technical support for manufacturing operations.

  • Coordinate holiday and weekend coverage, vacation coverage to maintain 24/7 support.

  • Perform employee evaluation and performance reviews.

  • Track and approve time sheets for employee and contract controls.

  • Interview, hire, onboard and develop new employees.

  • Estimate judge and balance workload of the team.

  • Develop project estimates for trades support, part delivery and development and installation timing.

  • Prioritize and balance project work.

  • Engineer, design, build, implement and maintain controls for machinery, tools & equipment. 

  • Manage significant downtime events by providing controls support for speedy recovery.

  • Participate and represent controls in throughput and downtime meetings. 

  • Support change management projects by developing and participating in production trials.

  • Become a coach and teacher for new team members and other engineers.

  • Support implementation and training for standardized work development.

  • Prepare and present technical presentations to plant staff and GM directors.

  • Support implementation of new processes & equipment.

  • Direct the controls design, construction, integration, plant installation, successful launch and continuous improvement of equipment and tools required in plants to produce high-quality parts and propulsion products.

  • Provide technical direction to, and oversight of outside vendor sources when vendors are on site.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years of Machining Controls Engineering experience in Manufacturing or Manufacturing Engineering discipline with plant floor experience.

  • Solid understanding of high-volume machining processes.

  • Experience in troubleshooting equipment (problem solving/debug).

  • Understanding of pneumatic, mechanical, and control drawings.

  • Understanding of the application of part locating, mechanics and machine design/PLC controls architecture.

  • Ability and willingness to work any shift.

  • Ability and willingness to work non-standard hours outside of normal shift (early morning, late evenings and some weekends and holidays) to support installation and maintenance of equipment.

  • Self-motivated individual.

  • Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals required.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and complex projects with a high level of autonomy and accountability for results.
