About the role

Promotes breastfeeding in the Special Supplemental Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clinic and the community by providing education, assistance and support to breastfeeding mothers and their infants to attain a successful breastfeeding relationship. Provides, evaluates, and documents breastfeeding education, counseling, support and follow-up for families experiencing routine and/or complex issues associated with lactation and breastfeeding.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Serve as a Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE). Provides counseling and support for families experiencing routine and/or complex issues associated with lactation and breastfeeding. Evaluates breastfeeding process with mother/infant, based on the individual needs and goals of the breastfeeding mother/infant including evaluation of outcomes and appropriate follow-up. 

 

2. Serves in coordinator role(s) as required by WIC Program. Assists in the planning, development, and obtaining approval for and implements Annual Breastfeeding Education Plan. 

 

3. Provides training on breastfeeding issues to others on the WIC team and shares information from current breastfeeding reference materials. Trains Breastfeeding Peer Counselors in accordance with State Agency requirements. Ensures compliance with required training to include attending conferences and meetings. 

 

4. Provides, evaluates, and documents breastfeeding education, counseling, support and consistent follow-up contacts with clients. Performs all duties following State and local agency policies, procedures and guidelines. 

 

5. Evaluates, issues, orders and maintains appropriate documentation of the breastfeeding equipment and supply issuances. Maintains documentation of contacts and counseling as required by state; audits logs and inventory monthly or more frequently. 

 

6. Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with participants, staff and community services supportive of breastfeeding families. 

 

7. Provide excellent internal/external customer service via telephone, fax, or face to face contact to members. 

 

8. Performs other departmental duties as assigned. 

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or equivalent required

Must have current certification from IBCLC

Must be trained in accordance with the State Agency

Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred

Must have telephone availability and have access to reliable transportation

Travel required as requested

Prior knowledge of the WIC program preferred

Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), American Heart Association

Scheduled hours and/or work locations are subject to change

 

 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

Finger Dexterity: Using fingers to make small movements such as typing or picking up small objects.

Talking: Frequently conveying detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, clearly, or quickly.

Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.

Repetitive Motions: Frequently and regularly using the wrists, hands, and fingers.

Visual: Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or other materials.

Physical: Moderate activity; assist staff and monitoring flow. May have to lift folders, files, papers, audio/video equipment, and other such items weighing up to approximately 25 lbs.
