Position Summary
Support BMI’s mainframe modernization initiative by configuring Zowe within VS Code, demonstrating REST-enabled z/OS workflows, mapping z/OS USS capabilities, and building starter playbooks that move mainframe code into collaborative Git repositories.
Key Responsibilities
• Configure VS Code and Zowe CLI extensions to provide secure REST access to z/OS (Mainframe) datasets and utilities.
• Build sample workflows that leverage CDA (Cloud Data Access) Services and GDKUTIL (new utility to move data between Cloud and z/OS) to treat z/OS storage as cloud-accessible assets.
• Collaborate with system engineers to prototype utilizing z/OS USS (Unix System Services) in cloud integration scripts and running Java workloads on z/OS.
• Create Git migration runbooks and host quick-start sessions to onboard mainframe development teams.
• Set up VS Code with Zowe, CDA, and Git tools so it connects securely to BMI z/OS environments.
• Document Git-centered workflows for migrating legacy source libraries and share the approach with mainframe and application developers.
Qualifications
Education:
• Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar technical major.
• Information Systems or Data Science with an interest in enterprise automation.
• Mathematics, Physics, or other STEM majors with programming exposure.
• Any discipline supplemented by coursework in scripting or systems integration.
• Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university as an undergraduate student.
• GPA 3.0 or greater
• Must return to school in the Fall of 2026.
Skills and Abilities:
• Familiarity with Git fundamentals such as branching and pull requests.
• Comfort using command-line tooling or scripting (Python, Node.js, or similar).
• Hands-on experience with Linux or UNIX shell environments and basic system utilities.
• Exposure to REST APIs or HTTP-based integrations.
• Curiosity about mainframe platforms and modern DevOps practices.
