ROLE TITLE:  Director of Virginia Affairs (part-time)

POSITION REPORTS TO: Senior Managing Director, Chief of Virginia Affairs (Mark Hazelgrove)

LOCATION: This is a hybrid role requiring residency anywhere in Virginia, with periodic travel a few times during the year for in-person activities in Central Virginia and/or Hampton Roads

COMMITMENT: Part-Time (20 hours per week)

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As part of a strategic, grant-funded expansion, Teach For America (TFA) is seeking a part-time (20 hours/week) mission-aligned professional with strong operations and event planning experience to build capacity and drive key programmatic initiatives in Virginia. This role is a strong fit for an entrepreneurial leader who excels at managing logistics, executing complex projects, and is motivated by the opportunity to demonstrate clear and immediate impact. You will be responsible for further laying a strong operational foundation for our work to deepen impact and support the long-term growth of TFA in the region.

WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

Program Management & Operations (40%)

• Manage the day-to-day execution of the Ignite program at a designated school site, collaborating with TFA’s national Ignite team and school leadership to ensure strong student impact and operational excellence.

• Conduct in-person visits to the Ignite tutoring site to build relationships, ensure streamlined operations, and problem-solve as needed.

• Gather and analyze Ignite site data to guide internal decision-making and support external reporting.

• Alongside the Chief of Virginia Affairs, explore the conditions needed for a Federal Work Study program at a Hampton Roads college or university to support scaling the Ignite program.

Alumni & Stakeholder Engagement (30%)

• Plan and execute events for school- and central office-based alumni educators in communities such as Hampton Roads to build relationships, identify professional development needs, and grow their impact; after events, process expense reports and update alumni records.

• Coordinate and execute on alumni educator strategic supports and development, in communities such as Hampton Roads, including but not limited to: classroom supply grants; National Board Certification support; and Virginia School Leadership Scholarship support.

• Support the Chief of Virginia Affairs to build and steward relationships with influential state and local stakeholders (including school divisions) in communities such as Hampton Roads to communicate TFA’s impact and explore programmatic expansion.

• Support alumni moving to Central Virginia and Hampton Roads from outside of Virginia and pursuing a teaching role to complete required next steps.

Recruitment & Regional Support (30%)

• In collaboration with TFA’s Recruitment team and the D.C. and Virginia Regional Team, attend career fairs for emerging market and/or regionally prioritized schools in Hampton Roads and/or universities in central Virginia to strengthen the local recruitment pipeline.

• Support with liaising across multiple TFA teams to gather data from prospects in Hampton Roads and/or central Virginia regarding if they would preference joining a teacher corps in Hampton Roads if this were a future option.

• Book travel and process reimbursement paperwork for Virginian alumni educators attending professional development supported by TFA.

• As needed, assist the Chief of Virginia Affairs in crafting and sending newsletters and other external communication.

• As needed, assist the Chief of Virginia Affairs in larger-scale alumni programming and events, in both planning and execution.

A WEEK IN THE LIFE

Over the course of any week, the person in this role will focus on both macro-level strategy and ground-level execution. They will spend time managing the operational logistics that ensure our programs run smoothly, from analyzing Ignite site data to processing classroom supply grants for alumni. They will also plan and execute key events to engage TFA alumni in communities such as Hampton Roads and Central Virginia. This involves balancing the detailed, behind-the-scenes work of program operations with the relationship-building central to supporting our network in Virginia.
