Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is recruiting for a Spring TDS Proteins API CEAS Automation Co-Op, located in Malvern, PA.

Research & Development Co-op Overview:

J&J R&D encompasses the development of sophisticated materials, process improvements, risk management and mechanical testing through the development process across all sectors including Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Consumer and Corporate/Enterprise.

We offer a fast-paced cross-functional, technologically advanced, corporate environment, passionate about developing individual engineering and scientific skills. You will have the opportunity to learn about anatomy, disease states, deformities and the surgical procedure/products used to address these conditions.

Life as an R&D Co-op:

The R&D Co-op program provides each student with real-life hands-on experience, coaching and mentoring, networking opportunities, as well as the opportunity to meet people from various schools throughout the country. Each Co-op will be assigned to a single function with a specific project for the 6-month term.

The typical Co-op term is from Jan 2026– Jun 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

The Cell Engineering and Analytical Sciences group at Johnson&Johnson-Innovative Medicine is at the junction of R&D and manufacturing for the development of life-saving Large Molecule biotherapeutics. We specialize in creating, selecting, and evaluating the cell lines that grow biotherapeutics, which are used throughout the duration of the products lifetime: formulations, clinical studies and large-scale manufacturing bioreactors.

Our group has been steadily expanding our automation capabilities to increase throughput and sampling depth for the development of high-quality biotherapeutic producing cell lines. In the coming years, we plan to significantly increase the number of automation work cell systems distributed among the various labs of our group.

Laboratory physical-automation focuses on robotic systems that move samples and reagents between various locations. These locations can include sample containers (tubes, plates), utility devices (centrifuges, heaters/shakers), storage units, or terminal sample analysis instruments. To enable this, sample transport robotics and the devices they interact with need to be programmatically controlled and tightly coordinated. Groups of such devices are often referred to as work cell systems.

As our group expands, we aim to have a decentralized network of specialized work cells. A goal for these decentralized work cells, operating independently, is to eventually exchange materials seamlessly via a shared room-to-room robotic transport network. We’re currently evaluating several candidate transport technologies for this purpose.

In this role, the Co-Op will...

  • Work with the physical-automation team on the initial deployment of the selected robotic transportation network, as well as develop and configure the control logic and work cell communication protocols.

  • Get hands-on experience with our existing automation work cells, gaining familiarity and refining their operations.

  • Analyze and interpret experimental results using analytical and statistical techniques. Actively participate in weekly meetings with internal and external collaborators.

  • Participate in technical discussions on design of experiments to fill gaps in knowledge.

  • Maintain a laboratory notebook and other technical documents according to required guidelines.

  • Provide other project support as needed.
