Department Overview
The Vollum Institute is a privately endowed research institute at Oregon Health & Science University dedicated to basic research that will lead to new treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Vollum scientists have broad-ranging interests that coalesce around molecular neurobiology and cellular physiology. Their work has transformed the field of neuroscience and, in particular, have provided important advances in the study of synaptic transmission, neuronal development, neurotransmitter transporters, ion channels and the neurobiology of disease.
This position would be to lead the projects aiming to understand how brain circuits and their modulation contribute to animal behavior using slice physiology, optic stimulation, stereotaxic surgery, quantitative anatomy, and computation. The primary focus of the position will be to perform both data collection and data analysis using these technologies. The position will require hypothesis generation and formulation of the hypothesis in the form of grant submissions, backed with preliminary data that are in hand as well as data to be generated by the candidate. Quantitative skills are required for this position, particularly in compliance with data handling and data deposition required by the funding agencies. Results will be presented as manuscripts and at national meetings. The position will also involve collaboration with other researchers in and outside of the Mao laboratory. Particularly, this position will have close collaboration with Dr. Haining Zhong’s laboratory at the Vollum Institute. The position is supported by a current NIH R01 as well as multiple BRAIN Initiative grants. The candidate will contribute to the training of other members of the group, particularly graduate students and undergraduate researchers.
This role is temporary for only 2-3 months past hire date.
Function/Duties of Position
- Design and execution of studies to image and record mouse insular cortex in behaviorally relevant contexts.
- Manuscript preparation, grant writing and scientific communication.
- Collaborate and support other projects in the Mao Lab.
Required Qualifications
PhD in relevant field
Extensive experience in performing brain slice electrophysiology recording; experience with programing and coding;
Experience with rodent surgery.
Extensive knowledge about sensori-motor circuits and cortical structure-function;
Knowledge about brain-body interaction.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong electrophysiology experience
- Experience with physiology and microscope hardware.
Experience with modeling;
Experience with data handling and deposit.
Additional Details
Data collection will be carried out in the designated setups in the Mao lab. Computational analysis and interpretation of various datasets will also be carried out in the lab. Travel to meetings will be supported at least once at national level and multiple times locally per year to disseminate research results.
