Role Overview
We have an exciting opportunity to be in a key role of our growing design engineering team. We are looking for an innovator with mechanical design engineering experience in the nuclear industry. As an experienced mechanical engineer, you will prepare, review, and/or verify design packages for modifications and new design in Canadian nuclear power plants.
The key requirement for this role is that you have proven experience in mechanical design engineering and some experience in nuclear design engineering. You must also demonstrate the ability to rethink the usual way of doing things. The goal is to help the team grow and improve internally and to solve problems for our customers with innovations leading to greater efficiency in their current processes, providing them with value-added support that stands out from our competitors.
Please note that this role requires regular site visits to Bruce County and Durham Region, dependent on project needs.
Salary Range: $110-140k (Exact compensation may vary).
Responsibilities
- Perform the role of mechanical design engineer on various engineering assignments, requiring a strong knowledge of the mechanical engineering discipline and familiarity with broader engineering fields and the impacts on other disciplines.
- Lead and support technical teams in solving mechanical design problems related to modifications to existing plants and lead design of new systems and components.
- Assist in the development, procurement, and implementation of modern mechanical design engineering tools and processes.
- Contribute to the mentoring and development of junior design team members.
- Emphasize continuous improvement, focusing on innovation, efficiency, and high quality in all engineering tasks and deliverables.
Technical Accountabilities
- Prepare mechanical design change papers, specifications, requirements, plans, and other technical deliverables for nuclear projects, from conceptual through preliminary and detailed design phases and support design implementation and field changes, all in accordance with contractual commitments, applicable processes, and relevant quality assurance (QA) requirements.
- Perform calculations and analysis required to prepare design deliverables, referring to applicable requirements, codes, and standards.
- Conduct technical reviews and verification of engineering deliverables prepared by others.
- Participate in design reviews with customers, vendors, and internal design groups.
- Collaborate with other disciplines to define and achieve overall required system design functionality, performance, usability, reliability, availability, and maintainability.
- Work with project teams, interfacing with internal and client project management and design teams to identify technical and project risks, and ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and with high quality.
- Become proficient in and use the respective client’s enterprise document management system and configuration/change control processes and tools to complete submission of design deliverables.
- Become proficient in and use NPX’s processes, tools, and templates to produce design deliverables compliant with our QA program.
- Actively participate in and provide feedback on opportunities for improvement, lessons learned, and QA program non-compliances.
What you bring to the table?
- Completion of a 4-year University degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- A licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario (preferred).
- A minimum of 5 years of mechanical engineering design experience.
- A minimum of 4 years applying mechanical engineering within the nuclear industry.
- Good working knowledge of nuclear plant equipment and systems, design basis, and nuclear safety principles (experience with CANDU plants preferred).
- Good working knowledge of the nuclear industry’s engineering change control (ECC) and design modification process.
- Proven understanding of the Canadian nuclear industry regulatory documents, standards, and guidance for design practices and technical requirements.
- Familiarity with CSA B51 and ASME B31.1 required; understanding of CSA N285, ASME NCA 4000, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and CANDU plant systems and components is an asset.
