This is an exciting opportunity to join the Medtronic's Structural Heart and Aortic operating unit to work with a passionate Implant R&D team focused on early phase technology strategic exploration, exploratory proof of principle work and product development excellence. The engineer will use their high level technical and leadership skills to advance the development of an innovative product to treat mitral, tricuspid and/or aortic disease.

In this role, the Sr Principal R&D Engineer will be working as a technical leader and sets technical direction and guidance to the team in achieving innovative engineering solutions. He/she will be the chief frame design engineer responsible for developing flat patterns, understanding crimp and fatigue strain analyses, developing stiffness modeling, shape set modeling etc. He/she will interact with internal and external customers and vendors at various levels, including executive leadership, on significant matters including interacting with FDA and other regulatory agencies representing R&D.

As a complex problem solver, he/she will use advanced engineering expertise and reliability concepts to proactively identify and tackle complex problems. As a mentor/coach, he/she will frequently provide guidance, coaching and training to Engineers. This position might be involved in root cause investigation, developing short-term and long-term corrective actions working with cross functional teams. He/she will be thoroughly engaged in partnering with project teams to develop first principal models to predict design performance and product reliability

  • Apply advanced scientific and engineering principles and theories such as solid mechanics and mechanical design to solve complex technical problems and develop solutions.
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles and tools to evaluate and analyze mechanical designs and interactions. 
  • Provide technical leadership in supporting submissions to regulatory bodies and governmental agencies. Perform competitive product analysis and generate intellectual property and aid in the evaluation of intellectual property.
  • Develop test strategy based on therapeutic requirements derived from voice of customer, and execute on protocol, testing, data analysis, and reports required for future regulatory submissions
  • Identify issues, conduct root cause analysis, and map out resolution when evaluating technology, designing parts, components and sub-assemblies using engineering first principles and appropriate test evaluations 
  • Communicate with internal/external customers and vendors; represent work through internal conferences and collaborations across multiple business units and functions
  • Design, develop, analyze, troubleshoot and provide technical skills during research and/or product development.
  • Strongly influence the design of new products, processes, standards, or operational plans based on business strategy with a significant impact on functional results. Implements strategic goals established by functional leadership

Must Have: Minimum Requirements (To be considered for this role, please ensure the minimum requirements are evident on your resume):

  • Bachelors’ degree required. Mechanical, Materials, Chemical, Biomedical or related Engineering Degree
  • 10 years of relevant experience, OR advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience


Nice to Have:

  • Advanced Degree in Engineering Discipline
  • Understanding of Reliability Engineering and Predictive modeling & statistical method
  • Understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Understanding of Nitinol (Nickel Titanium alloy) and its properties
  • Demonstrated aptitude for assessing emerging technologies
  • Demonstrated business acumen, executive presence, and communication skills
  • Proven skills in quantitative analysis and data-driven decision making
  • Experience with conducting strategic brainstorm sessions and ideation activities
  • Experienced in intellectual property fundamentals and strategic planning
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Flexible and adaptable, comfortable working in a dynamic environment
