Under constant supervision from Sheriff Academy Cadre and sworn personnel, this position is responsible for attending and successfully completing the Sheriff Academy by fulfilling the academic and physical requirements of the Basic Peace Officer Course to qualify for commission as a peace officer with Dallas County.
1. Attends classes, maintains comprehensive notebooks, and completes homework assignments.
2. Participates in the physical training program, firearms training, defensive tactics program and practical problems to demonstrate the following required abilities:
· necessary strength and agility to subdue and restrain persons resisting arrest including the proper use of handcuffs and other restraining devices;
· adequate hand, arm and upper body strength and ability to safely operate a handgun and/or shoulder weapon with either hand and qualify with same on a prescribed course;
· necessary agility and endurance to pursue violators on foot and the ability to scale a reasonable barrier or obstruction while in foot pursuit of violators, to include running up and down flights of stairs;
· ability to remove an injured or unconscious person of reasonable size from an area of danger;
· ability to safely operate an automobile on a public street or highway without the use of any specialized equipment peculiar only to the operator while utilizing the police radio and emergency equipment such as siren and emergency lights.
3. Actively participates in classroom discussions and group projects and demonstrates the ability to apply knowledge gained in the Basic Police Officer Course.
4. Complies with established rules and regulations governing the Sheriff Academy and assignments and instructions given by the Cadre of the Sheriff Academy or other sworn officers of which he/she is being supervised.
5. Provides assistance to sworn officers in areas such as processing prisoners, investigating traffic accidents, securing and impounding evidence at crime scenes, performing traffic control at accident scenes, ride-alongs with sheriff deputies to learn how to handle real-life situations (various patrols), helping with dispatch, enforcing parking, etc.
6. Supervisory responsibilities may be assigned periodically.
7. Performs other duties as required by the Sheriff.
Eligibility Requirements:
* Completed at least 30 semester hours of accredited college course work with grades of at least a C average,
OR
Received an honorable discharge from the armed forces of the United States after at least twenty-four months of active duty; OR currently serve as a Texas Peace Officer with two years continuous employment with an agency in the State of Texas as a Peace Officer and currently possess a Basic Peace Officer Certificate issued by TCOLE, OR served as a Detention Service Officer for at least 2 years with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.
Additional Requirements
* At least twenty-one (21) years of age.
* A citizen of the United States.
* Have not had a Peace Officer, jailer, or reserve license issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (or any other like issuing authority) revoked or suspended for any reason.
* Have never been convicted of or received probation for any offense Class A misdemeanor or above.
* Have not been convicted of or received probation for a Class B misdemeanor within the past ten (10) years.
* Have never been convicted at any level of an offense involving Family Violence.
* If applicable, when discharged from the military, must have been discharged under Honorable conditions.
* Show proof of one of the following: a high school diploma, a GED, or an honorable discharge after at least 24 months of active duty.
