About the role

To supervise all clerical personnel in the Central Processing Department. To train all lab personnel in the use of the LIS.

A. Clinical/Technical/Service

  1. Supervises all clerical personnel in the Central Processing Department
  2. Trains all lab personnel in the use of the LIS
  3. Delegates the following duties to staff and performs them when necessary:
    • Intakes, time stamps, and accessions all specimens; centrifuges specimens; appropriately distributes specimens to the different laboratory sections
    • Properly packages and sends specimens to appropriate test site
    • Reviews all overdue specimens
    • Collects and sorts all reports in preparation for pick-up by messenger
    • Answers phone queries about laboratory results
    • Discards outdated specimens following laboratory guidelines
    • Assists in the preparation and update of procedure manuals
    • Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies
    • Maintains all Quality Assurance reviews
    • Reviews daily entries into the LIS and takes appropriate steps
    • Maintains continued compliance with policies, procedures, and record keeping necessary to meet the standards of accrediting agencies
    • Performs all duties of laboratory clerks as required
  4. Works weekends, holidays, and other shifts when required
  5. Monitors daily temperature of refrigerators, freezers, and other equipment as needed, informing the supervisor when temperatures are out of range
  6. Performs daily, weekly, monthly, and other maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Washes and cleans sinks, body trays, bench tops, cabinets, and other equipment.
  7. Assists in maintaining the supply room. Accepts laboratory materials from Receiving or other vendors.
  8. Transports specimens and reports between laboratories and clinics.
  9. Coordinates chemical supplies between the Grossing, Frozen section, histology/Autopsy room.
  10. Prepares tissue fixture solutions and maintains an updated inventory of special solutions.
  11. On a weekly basis, discards specimens and organs, submitting a listing of same for department records. Disposes of anatomical specimens in compliance with government codes and regulations.
  12. Prepares gross surgical specimens, including numbering cassettes describing same.
  13. Receive, scans and prepares slide trays for pathologist review. File slides after Pathologist review.
  14. Remains familiar with and enforces all safety regulations and practices
  15. Meets criteria for competency assessment in all areas
  16. Performs general housekeeping duties as assigned to maintain a safe and sanitary environment. Maintains a clean and orderly work are
  17. Performs work assignment within expected standard of performance
  18. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area

  1. Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group
  2. Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment

B. Organizational/Managerial

  1. Participates in the department's performance improvement activities
  2. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information
  3. Assists in the preparation of payroll documents
  4. Assists in the preparation of work, vacation, and day-off schedules. Keeps work records for personnel and follows up in use of sick time
  5. Trains all central processing staff on CPA policies and procedures
  6. May assist in the initiation of and delivery of disciplinary action
  7. Assists in the performance of yearly evaluations on staff
  8. Routinely monitors performance of staff according to competency assessment guidelines
  9. Enforces all safety regulations
