Overview

The Architecture/Sustainability Visual Accessibility Assistant (AVAA) will be responsible for providing academic accessibility to a M.Arch I student who has a visual disability. The AVAA will work with the student in architecture settings such as peer-reviews and critiques to describe visual elements of physical representations or models. The AVAA will also provide real-time support for the student during the preparation of drawings, models, renderings, etc. The AVAA may also be asked to support with using technology in the Architecture Shop room. The hours for this position will be variable and will be decided week to week on an as needed basis between the student and the AVAA. This position requires a minimum of 20 hours.

This position will work under the Associate Director of Assistive Technology to work one-on-one with the student who to describe, review, and assist in the creation and observation of architectural representation materials e.g. physical models, digital photographs, printed drawings, etc. This position is only available to a person with a background in Architecture.

Reliable - Successful candidate will need to be very reliable and communicative with their assigned student.

Flexible Schedule - Candidate should understand that some tasks will have high priority and that hours and may change week-to-week and sometimes day-to-day as needed. All hours will be decided ahead of time and the AVAA is not expected to be “on-call” at all times.

Required Skills and Abilities

Mature - Employee will need to display a high level of discretion, confidentiality and professionalism in dealing with student, staff, and faculty populations.

Detail-oriented - Verbally described materials will need to be content specific and detailed in explanation.

Knowledge Base - AVAA will need to be familiar with foundational architectural concepts and terminology due to the specificity of the work involved. Familiarity with architectural conventions and working processes are a plus.

Digital Adeptness – Knowledge of digital work tools (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite or Rhino) is a plus. Alternatively, awareness of similar software and/or proven ability to rapidly familiarize oneself with various digital tools.

Dexterity – Fine adjustments to drawings, images, and physical models will be required, therefore, physical dexterity is required to both spot and amend minute details in an efficient manner. Previous experience with model-making—working with exacto knives, collage techniques, glueing, mending, etc.—is a plus.

Principal Responsibilities

1.  Assists in the management of a comprehensive program of services to meet the needs of students with disabilities within the framework of federal regulations, current accepted learning theories, and established best practices. 2.  Consults with and advises instructors and course support staff on the selection, creation and use of effective and accessible technologies for teaching and learning. 3.  Works with Yale service providers in Information Technology Services, Procurement, the Broadcast Center, the Resource Office on Disabilities and the University Library, among others, on issues involving accessibility of learning resources for teaching and learning. 4.  Designs and conducts training and outreach efforts to enhance awareness regarding accessibility of educational resources. 5.  Researches and stays abreast of emerging technologies, accessibility guidelines, relevant trends in higher education, and best practices and tools for accessible learning environments. 6.  Designs and implements an effective and sustainable program for accessibility of academic resources. 7.  Hires and trains student workers.
