The job of Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) coordinates with the occupational therapist in the preparation, implementation, and performance of occupational therapy interventions according to the student’s Individualized Education Plan and under the direction of the Occupational Therapist. This job reports to Occupational Therapist and Coordinator of Therapeutic Services.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Ensure the implementation of students’ IEP objectives and record and collect corresponding data; accurately document progress and needs related to goals and write progress reports.
- Maintain files and/or records in cooperation with the Occupational Therapist (e.g. daily notes, attendance, Medicaid forms, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities
- Provide direct occupational therapy services to students according to service delivery and IEP goals and objectives for the purpose of ensuring compliance with established practices and procedures
- Instruct, counsel and supervise students in daily living skills, academics, self advocacy, play/leisure, vocational training, fine motor and visual perceptual skills identified in IEP.
- Create meaningful, individualized, and functional treatment activities to achieve student specific goals and objectives
- Communicate effectively and positively with professional staff and individuals associated with student’s services, in a collaborative team effort and attend team meetings when appropriate and as directed by OT
- Support students within Community Inclusion activities for recreation & education, etc., as indicated by student interests and IEP objectives.
- Adapt school and classroom environment, tools and materials under the supervision of the OT for the purpose of improving student functioning and facilitating student access to curricular and instructional activities.
- Support programs for sensory needs and functional life skill development (i.e. individualized sensory programs, cooking groups etc.) in collaborating with Occupational Therapist
- Provide training, consultation, and instruction to teachers and additional team members on the use of adaptive equipment and OT specific programming
- Collaborate and assist with Occupational Therapist in the completion of reevaluations and the development of treatment plans.
- Communicate with Occupational Therapist when student’s status changes and requires modifications to the plan of care.
- Participate in monthly supervision meetings with the Occupational Therapist.
- Maintain all staff mandated education and training including CPR/First Aid, Safety Care, as well as state and national licensures and requirements

Qualifications
Must be a Licensed Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant in the state of Massachusetts.
