Reporting to the SVP of Finance, the Senior Director of Tax will be responsible for continuing to build TerrAscend’s in-house tax function. The Director of Tax will have full ownership over all aspects of provision, compliance, planning and strategy with significant exposure to the company’s subsidiaries throughout the U.S and Canada. The Director of Tax will play a critical role partnering with senior leadership in ensuring compliance with tax regulations and requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong corporate tax foundation from public accounting combined with extensive exposure and diverse experience spanning compliance, provision, and tax planning. The role will be a key partner to the enterprise. We are looking for a proactive leader who will strengthen the tax compliance and effectiveness of the tax function for the organization as we pose for growth. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering increased value to the organization through strong tax compliance, efficient cost management of outside tax firms, and deliver innovative tax strategies for the business. Supporting the entire organization, you will improve the overall fiscal performance by providing key indicators to management, for critical accounting decision making. The role will work closely with the Finance, as well as Senior Leadership team, involving both the Business Units and TerrAscend Corporate.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of direct and indirect tax for the enterprise, including tax reporting, cash tax forecasting, management of the tax team and costs, strategic solutioning, and ensuring tax compliance for the company.
  • Act as the primary tax advisor to the executive leadership team, offering insights on tax implications for critical business decisions.
  • Manage the Tax team, including both in-house staff and third-party tax firms.
  • Oversee the timely and accurate filings of indirect tax returns performed on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Manage tax provision calculations in accordance with ASC 740 and collaborate with finance teams for accurate financial reporting.
  • Lead the tax accounting provision process and reporting for the company’s operations, including the reporting of uncertain tax positions, calculation of effective tax rates, deferred tax items, related journal entries, and review of tax account reconciliations.
  • Manage the tax calendar and ensure the timely filing of all tax-related returns.
  • Responsible for the U.S. GAAP consolidated income tax provision for TerrAscend and its subsidiaries, ensuring that tax provisions and balance sheet tax accounts are properly stated.
  • Oversee and approve the preparation of federal and multi-state income tax returns.
  • Approve estimated federal and state tax payment calculations and the related submissions of payments.
  • Oversee compliance with international tax regulations, including transfer pricing, cross-border transactions, and foreign tax credit utilization.
  • Handle tax audits, including those involving international components, and liaise with tax authorities to resolve issues efficiently.
  • Oversee all federal and state tax audits and notices.
  • Provide tax due diligence and structuring advice
