As a top academic health and science center in the United States, Georgetown University Medical Center seeks to provide, in a synergistic fashion, excellence in education — training physicians, nurses and other health care professionals, as well as biomedical scientists — and cutting-edge interdisciplinary research collaboration, enhancing our basic science and translational biomedical research capacity in order to improve human health. The Georgetown University Global Health Institute (GUGHI) serves as a university-wide platform for supporting faculty, students, and staff who are contributing to global health through research, teaching, and service.

The Communications & Events Manager works closely with the Managing Director, Director, and senior leadership team of GUGHI, along with senior communications colleagues at Georgetown University to develop and implement a new strategy for communications and public engagement at GUGHI. Additionally, the incumbent will design a range of public events that bring together the Georgetown global health community and share the University’s work with the wider world. Reporting directly to GUGHI’s Managing Director and engaging with student workers and technical consultants (photographers, videographers, website and graphic designers) as required, the Communications & Events Manager has additional duties that include, but are not limited to:

Content Writing

  • Draft a range of content for GUGHI communications materials including feature stories, reports, webpages, social media content, and videos.

  • Consult with faculty and staff across the University to collect required data and information.

  • Coordinate the graphic design, digital, and print production as required.

  • Coordinate with communications specialists at Georgetown University to write press releases and engage journalists and the media with GUGHI’s work.

Event Planning & Delivery

  • Develop a signature events series to engage a range of internal and external audiences with Georgetown University’s activities and expertise in global health.

  • Oversee the planning and budgeting of GUGHI events, conferences, and webinars to ensure effective speaker selection and communication, venue booking, audio-visual and furniture arrangement, and catering.

  • Oversee the invitations and publicity of GUGHI events, along with the delivery of virtual and in-person events on the day.

Website, Email, and Social Media Management  

  • Oversee the design of a new website for GUGHI with a web developer.

  • Manage the GUGHI website on a day-to-day basis and social media accounts.

  • Oversee GUGHI’s email database and establish a set of regular email communications with different stakeholder groups, including the monthly newsletter.

  • Regularly review and report on communications analytics, driving a process of continuous optimization.

Strategic Communications Planning

  • Lead a process to map key stakeholders and develop a communications and events strategy for GUGHI, as well as its specific projects and initiatives.

  • Support efforts to review GUGHI’s brand and identity areas of opportunity to build GUGHI’s visibility and enhance its reputation.

  • Collaborate with the GUGHI team to identify and execute storytelling opportunities to highlight global health activity at Georgetown, including social media, multimedia content, and media materials.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Four to six years of experience working in communications, ideally in global health or a related field

  • Experience contributing to strategic communications planning

  • Exceptional writing skills with demonstrated ability to communicate to academics, policymakers, and the general public, among other audiences

  • Experience with website design projects, including conducting website content audits and developing content strategies

  • Experience writing, researching, and coordinating content for social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube

  • Experience in WordPress
