BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P BS DISTRIBUTION PLANNING Department of the P T&D AND INTERCONNECTION PLNG Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Manager Supervisor)

 

 

JOB FUNCTION:

Manages and directs the Distribution Planning Department to plan, evaluate, and recommend the logical, orderly development and enhancement of the Company’s subtransmission and distribution systems.  Directs the analysis of the impact of new utility supply-side resources and independent power producer (IPP) proposals on these same systems.   

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages and directs staff in the projection and analysis of loads to identify potential normal and/or emergency overloads and/or abnormal voltage conditions for every subtransmission and distribution transformer and circuit. Evaluates, recommends, and approves studies, presentations, plans, single-line diagrams, and alternatives for the logical and orderly development and enhancement of HECO’s electrical subtransmission and distribution systems.
  • Advises and recommends to senior management matters concerning subtransmission and distribution planning, network, design, and operations.
  • Manages and directs staff in evaluating, recommending, and approving plans, diagrams, design calculations, and other engineering studies for IPP project proposals. Manages and directs the work and training of engineering personnel as assigned. Participates in various committees, task forces, and special projects which require knowledge of the subtransmission and distribution systems. Prioritizes subtransmission and distribution projects in the Capital Budget.
  • Advises, recommends, and approves policies, procedures, and plans for conducting short and long-range distribution studies, system protection, short circuit, underfrequency, load flow, power quality, reliability, voltage drop, losses, and other engineering plans, reports, studies, and presentations. Provides technical support on company initiatives including net energy metering, distributed generation, interconnection requirements, renewables, and integrated resource planning.  
  • Manages decisions related to the supervision of personnel including but not limited to performance evaluations, development plans, hiring, termination, discipline, promotions, etc. Determines priority of work assigned and process to complete in an effective and timely manner. Determines the Division’s present and forecasted operational needs for budgeting purposes. Identifies and addresses employee issues and concerns to work towards equitable solutions.
  • Manages and directs staff in evaluating and recommending substation, circuit, duct, and protection requirements for large customers and subdivisions.  
  • Manages, directs, researches, develops, and coordinates complex or novel assignments expected to result in the development of new or improved techniques and procedures and/or new or refined equipment, materials, products, or scientific methods.
  • Manages, directs, investigates, or researches the practices of other utilities.  Manages, directs, coordinates, checks, and approves studies and designs of consulting engineers.  Keeps abreast of political, regulatory, and technical changes, innovations, and progress related to functional area.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

 

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education and experience required. Emphasis in the field of Power System Analysis is highly desirable.
  • Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education and experience is highly desirable.
  • Extensive knowledge of methods of economic analysis, and principles of electrical engineering in the field of power system analysis including load flows, power quality, reliability, voltage drop, losses, short circuit analysis, and system protection.
