About the role

The Managing Director of the Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center supports the Executive Director in achieving the Center's vision and mission. Manages daily operations; hires, supervises, and supports staff; coordinates programs; designs and leads instructional services; and ensures effective communication between stakeholders. The Managing Director also assists with strategic planning, program development, and program assessment. Reports to the Executive Director of the Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center.

Manages operations: Ensures the smooth functioning of the Herbert Writing Center’s facilities and operations, overseeing and troubleshooting day-to-day activities to ensure efficient delivery of services and effective utilization of resources in alignment with budgetary guidelines. Coordinates services with other campus units and departments, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for all Herbert Writing Center users. 

 

Hires, supervises, and evaluates personnel: Hires, supervises, and evaluates 4 full-time staff members. Supervises the process of recruiting, hiring, and evaluating undergraduate, graduate, part-time, and other writing consultants. Evaluates and assesses annual staffing needs and recommends appropriate number of writing consultants needed. 

 

Assists with strategic planning and assessment: Assists the Executive Director in developing long-term goals and objectives by conducting benchmarking studies of other writing centers, summarizing research on innovative practices to meet current student writing needs, and developing informational reports. Implements comprehensive assessment measures to evaluate program effectiveness, and develops semester, fiscal, and annual reports. 

 

Implements instructional programs, services, and courses: Leads and guides the implementation of all instructional programs, workshops, services, resources, and events to ensure they meet student and/or faculty needs and align with best practices in writing pedagogy. Designs curricular and online resources and serves as instructor of record for writing workshop courses and, if needed, tutor-training and internship courses. 

 

Collaborates and builds relationships: Builds strong collaborative relationships with faculty, students, and community partners to enhance program development and student writing support. Works closely with campus departments and units to meet staffing needs and implement program initiatives.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree in English; Composition Studies; Rhetoric Studies; Writing Studies; English Education, Leadership Studies in Higher Education; or related field
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of administrative experience in writing centers and/or other higher education administration; experience managing and implementing writing center programs; experience with curriculum development and instructional design.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:  Knowledge of: best practices and past and present approaches in tutoring, writing centers, writing pedagogy, and faculty development; strategic planning; writing program assessment; and tutor training. Ability to: prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple roles in a complex environment; to lead and supervise staff teams effectively; to solve complex problems and make effective decisions that impact program development, staff, and student instruction; and to teach and tutor writing effectively at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Canvas, Canva, and instructional technologies and platforms; Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Doctoral degree in English; Composition Studies; Rhetoric Studies; Writing Studies; English Education, Leadership Studies in Higher Education; or related field
  • Experience: Experience with efforts to integrate generative AI tools into writing instruction and support

  • This position is located at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN, and is onsite only.
