About the role

Our healthcare system is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. Every year, over 50 million Americans suffer adverse financial consequences as a result of seeking care, from lower credit scores to garnished wages. The challenge is only getting worse, as high deductible health plans are the fastest growing plan design in the U.S.

Cedar’s mission is to leverage data science, smart product design and personalization to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. Today, healthcare providers still engage with its consumers in a “one-size-fits-all” approach; and Cedar is excited to leverage consumer best practices to deliver a superior experience.

The Role

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Data Engineering team as we continue to invest in a high quality data platform at Cedar. This role sits at the critical intersection of our billing systems, data architecture, and executive reporting.

Your team’s mandate is to strengthen the pipelines that power client billing, financial reporting, and machine learning. In this role, you aren’t just moving data; you are building the definitive record of our company’s revenue. You will lead the transition from raw data flows to a reliable, auditable "gold" layer that provides total clarity for our executive and finance teams.

What You Will Do

  • Grow and Guide: Manage a team of 3–6 specialized data engineers. You will focus on career coaching, technical mentorship, and fostering a culture of ownership and high quality.
  • Bridge the Gap: Navigate conversations between finance, product, and data science teams. You will resolve conflicting business logic and turn it into clear, standardized code.
  • Mission-Critical Reliability: Take ownership of the pipelines powering client billing. You will ensure our data in Snowflake is durable, easy to audit, and serves as the single source of truth for the entire company.
  • Design for Accuracy: Evolve the systems that calculate fees and generate insights. You will reduce manual work and data errors by building automated, resilient pipelines that catch issues before they reach the client.
  • Advocate for Data Quality: Work with software teams to ensure that changes to our apps don't break our billing or machine learning models downstream.

Our Tech Stack

  • Ingestion: Fivetran for automated ELT, Snowpipe for continuous loading, and Kafka for real-time event streaming.
  • Warehouse: Snowflake utilizing a Bronze/Silver/Gold architecture.
  • Transformation: dbt with integrated testing and CI/CD.
  • Orchestration: Airflow managing complex billing and reporting workflows.
  • Governance: OpenMetadata treating data as a reliable internal product.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience: 7+ years of hands-on data engineering, with at least 2 years in a leadership role (EM or Tech Lead) managing performance and growth.
  • Rigor: A background in building high-reliability systems where accuracy is paramount (e.g., billing, fintech, or regulated environments).
  • System Design: A track record of turning messy or disconnected data into trusted, easy-to-use data products.
  • Managing Ambiguity: Proven ability to lead projects where requirements change and stakeholders (like finance vs. product) have different priorities.
  • Technical Depth: SQL and deep experience with a modern data stack (e.g., Snowflake, dbt, Airflow).
  • Nice to have: Familiarity with healthcare RCM reporting metrics or core financial performance metrics

What This Role Is Not

  • Not "Hands-Off": You must be willing to dive into data models and SQL logic to unblock your team and ensure the work is solid. Your time will likely be split 40% team leadership, 30% technical leadership and 30% cross functional alignment.
  • Not Greenfield-Only: You will need to navigate legacy systems and specific customer edge cases to move the company toward a cleaner future.
  • Not a Silo: Success requires influencing people outside your team; you are a strategic partner to Finance and Product leadership.
  • Not General Infrastructure: Your focus is on the meaning of the data and financial accuracy, not managing DevOps or internal developer tools.

Compensation Range and Benefits:

  • Salary Range*: $195,500 - 230,000
