Summary

A Senior Engineering Aide performs moderately difficult sub-professional engineering work with a field survey party and provides routine technical assistance to engineers, technicians and others in an office.   This position is characterized by the performance of technical tasks, under direct supervision of engineers or higher level technicians in support of engineering programs or water projects. Sample of tasks performed include reducing field notes, tracing maps and plans, collecting field data, recording test and survey data and holding or positioning survey and test equipment.  Typically, Senior Engineering Aides receive general instructions about work to be done from Senior Engineers or designee, however, incumbents work with relative independence in selecting methods, collecting and evaluating information and preparing calculations, maps and plans.  Specific and detailed instructions are given to tasks which deviate from well-established routine or in case of any unusual problems.

Examples of duties

Participates in field survey teams;

-takes measurements in such areas as street property line, sidewalks, paving, mapping, sewer and water surveys;

-collects and records data and information;

-conducts tests on site, using simple testing and measurement equipment;

-prepares simple maps and plot plans;

-checks measurements and tests performed by others;

-performs simple engineering calculations to verify data collected on complete measurements and tests;

-locates and confirms property lines.

Inspects construction projects to assure correct materials are used, work is performed correctly and projects are constructed according to specifications and plans;

-records results of tests and inspections and prepares reports;

Prepares and revises maps including drawing and tracing maps, indicating such areas as transferring level and cross section notes to plan and profile sheets, drawing in grade lines established by an engineer and completing the plans by inking, lettering and transferring to base maps location of pipes, conduit cables or similar lines or structures as portrayed by a field sketch;

-drafts and traces property maps and adjusts when necessary;

-prepares map indices;

Performs clerical work as required which is familiar with engineering practices;

-makes routine office computations in connection with reduction and plotting of field notes of survey;

Takes traffic surveys, which involve gathering data on vehicle volume count and accidents;

-reviews data and develops traffic controls

Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

PROMOTIONAL

Continuous and permanent status in any city department as an Engineering Aide for one year. 

OPEN COMPETITIVE

(A)     Associates Degree from an accredited college, university or technical institute in Engineering Science, Mechanical Drafting and Design or Drafting-Mechanical Technology;

OR

(B)     Sixty (60) semester credit hours from an accredited college, university or technical institute (any major) including two (2) courses in either mathematics, drafting or engineering science and one year of full time experience in field or office engineering work;

OR

(C)     Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma supplemented by two (2) courses in either drafting or mathematics and two years of full-time experience in field or office engineering work.

OR

(D)     an equivalent combination as defined within the limits of A through C.

Note:  Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.

Special Requirement for both Promotional and Open Competitive

Possession of a current NYS Driver’s License that must be presented at time of appointment and 

maintained during length of employment.
