JOB SUMMARY
This position assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of campus-wide buildings and facilities; assists in performing general carpentry, repairs, maintenance or construction work; assists skilled technicians in performing minor repairs of plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems to maintain campus facilities; independently performs maintenance tasks requiring a limited degree of professional skill; and performs related work as required. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assists skilled technicians in performing maintenance and repair tasks such as carpentry, locksmith, electricity, heating, plumbing, venting and air conditioning (HVAC).
- Assists with hanging sheetrock, laying tile, carpet, linoleum, etc., as needed.
- Cleans and maintains tools and equipment.
- Loads and unloads equipment and supplies.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses routine equipment and system problems; schedules and performs routine repair work or parts replacement.
- Paints walls and other surfaces as needed.
- Moves furniture and other heavy items as requested.
- Maintains accurate records on maintenance/repair work completed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- High school diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience in repairs and maintenance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of how to properly perform manual tasks.
- Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the tasks performed and equipment employed.
- Skill in the use of various trade tools and equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Ability to perform arithmetic.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the area of employment.
- Knowledge of the concepts and techniques of on-the-job training.
- Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. May be required to use a ladder or scaffolding. May be required to occasionally work in small, hard to reach spaces. Work is performed both inside a facility and outdoors in all weather conditions. Some hazardous situations may exist based on work to be performed.
