Senior Consultant - Electrical Engineering

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Senior Electrical Engineer in Substation Design for our Salt Lake City office. The following locations will also be considered: Seattle, WA or Portland, OR. Be involved in projects with our NW Pacific Power and Energy Team and be a part of a rapidly expanding group that provides trusted advisor and engineer of record services to clients in the energy sector.
This Opportunity
- We have an immediate opportunity for a Substation Electrical Engineer to provide delivery of high voltage electrical transmission substation designs for our projects.
- This position directly advances local and regional responses to Climate Change by supporting the owners and operators of clean hydro power and other renewable resources.
- Work with interdisciplinary teams on various transmission and distribution projects.
- Perform engineering duties from conceptual stages of projects through construction.
- Procurement of materials, project cost estimating, and quality control reviews.
- Work with drafting department to prepare drawings and specifications for various deliverables.
- Regularly meets and corresponds with clients, material vendors, sub-contractors, etc.
- Travel for project site visits and field reviews.
- Actively engages and supports business development initiatives in the transmission line market.

- You will be joining the premier engineering firm leading innovation and growth in hydropower and pumped storage, solar and batteries, and wind generation in a local office that supports the build-out of the bulk electric system in support of this clean power in the West.
Required Qualifications
- Employment authorization to work in the United States immediately
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program
- 5+ years working experience in high-voltage substation design for renewable developers and electrical utility clients integrated generation and transmission on 69kV to 500kV.
- The ideal candidate will have experience working in consulting firms.
- Engineer license or the ability to aquire within one year (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, California, Nevada, or Montana).
- This position is accountable to provide the design activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all WSP’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control. Specific duties include:
- Work under mentorship and guidance of the Supervising Engineer.
- Prepare substation plan and profile view, grounding, lightning protection, lighting, cable trench, cable trays, conduit layout and detail installation drawings.
- Have knowledge of related disciplines/fields of engineering. Be comfortable operating within a multi-discipline design team.
- Prepare studies and design calculations such as load flow, short circuit, Arc Flash, grounding, TOV, EMF, transformer sizing, cable sizing etc. using software including WinIGS, ETAP, SKM, CDEGS, CYMCAP. Study reports must be clear and well written.
- Provide percent complete as well as Estimated Time to Completion when requested by project managers or lead engineers.
- Provide input into improvement ideas during project execution and close-out.
- Prepare technical specifications for the electrical equipment, evaluate proposals from vendors, and review vendor drawings.
- Possess working knowledge of design software including AutoCAD and MicroStation. May be required to prepare or revise design drawings.
- Delivery of accurate and thorough designs that will meet industry standards and specifications, and meet good engineering practice with excellent constructability.
- Resolving site queries, attending site meetings and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
- Maintaining complete project documentation with respect to substation design and construction, including all completion packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
- Experienced user MS Office applications, strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
- Candidate must undergo pre-employment drug screening and a criminal background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
- 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
- Basic First Aid and Adult CPR train
