Purpose

The Assistant Director for Donor and External Relations leads the resource development effort for the Black Studies Collective (BSC) units. They will plan and execute various initiatives with current and prospective donors with the goal of soliciting support for BSC and maintaining philanthropic relations.

Report Structure: reports to Warfield Center Director with a dotted line report to Executive Director for Development.

Responsibilities

  • Fundraising/Prospecting/Stewardship: Work closely with Black Studies Leaders and Executive Director of Development to develop plan, implement, and evaluate a program of strategic engagements with donors and other key stakeholders to grow the base of support and increase annual giving. Actively participate in meeting or exceeding annual individual fundraising goals. Develop and manage a portfolio of around 50 prospective major gift prospects. Emphasis on portfolio and program building is to be expected in the first 12 – 24 months.  Conduct in-person visits with prospects and donors. Plan and execute a target total of 100 visits per year and a commensurate number of solicitations.  Coordinate on-campus visits and meetings and arrange for prospects and donors to meet with appropriate faculty and staff to advance relationships and gift conversations. Identify, and formally qualify, new major and leadership giving-level prospects by developing and executing long-range and short-range strategies and plans to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects, producing a continuous stream of donors capable of making gifts of $20,000 or more with a focus on unrestricted gifts and pledges toward undergrad, graduate, and faculty programs. Within 18 months of start date, consistently produce at least $100,000 in annual philanthropic support.  Maintain current strategies, contact reports and records in VIP (the University's Donor Relationship Management System) and associated databases.
  • Stewardship: Create, engage and steward patron groups (Advisory Committees) as well as assigned individual prospects and in-kind sponsorships to increase annual giving. Create a plan for engagement after each event and follow up with attendees in a timely fashion.
  • Communications: Draft compelling letters, proposals and other correspondence directed toward alumni and donors as appropriate. Participate in proposal preparation, strategy development, and stewardship as required for donors in the portfolio and in consultation with Black Studies Leaders and Executive Director of Development.  Deliver timely and effective follow-up to prospects and donors.
