Job Summary

Chemistry Technicians collect, prepare, and analyze samples from main and auxiliary plant systems and take actions necessary to ensure system parameters are within specification. Chemistry Technicians operate with strict adherence to policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Job Description

Under directive supervision, in accordance with Regulatory requirements, Station Operating License, Technical Specifications, and Operating Procedures, operates plant equipment, performs chemistry and radiochemistry analyses, and maintains logs of routine operations and analyses: performs such duties as:

1. Collecting, preparing, and analyzing samples of various gases, water, oils, waste, and environmental processes as assigned;

2. Performing routine instrument analyses, instrument checks and calibrations of chemistry and radiochemistry analysis equipment as qualified;

3. Operating and monitoring chemistry treatment and process systems, recommending changes in feed or control systems;

4. Actively participate during class room and OJT/TPE instruction and training as assigned;

5. Completing initial and incumbent or specialized qualifications as well as re-qualifications meeting training milestones as assigned;

6. Actively maintain housekeeping, work areas, and equipment in good order during and upon completion of work activities;

7. Being responsible for preparation and maintenance of records in connection with the work;

8. Assisting in testing of Station equipment and systems;

9. Assisting in the reporting of errors and making suggestions for improvements of Station procedures and tests;

10. Reporting abnormal or unusual conditions observed or encountered; such as abnormal operating conditions, safety conditions, and violations of security procedures using the corrective action program as required;

11. Performing all work in accordance with prescribed safety rules and regulations; and those associated with emergency procedures

12. Inventory, estimation, and requisition of necessary consumables, equipment, and supplies, as assigned.

13. Working with employees in higher classifications and performing other duties in accordance with the Forward to the Job Manual.

14. Performing similar or less skilled duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills:

Must meet Company’s requirements as to General Qualifications, and in addition:

1. Two (2) year Associate degree in a science or engineering related field (or equivalent experience) and successful completion of company administered chemistry technician entrance exam.

2. Must have a valid drivers license and be able to operate a Company motor vehicle as required;

3. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English;

4. Must have passed all qualifying exams;

5. Must qualify and maintain ability to wear industrial and radiological respiratory protective equipment;

6. Must be familiar with the principles of operating laboratory equipment and demonstrate ability to operate laboratory equipment, and qualitative and quantitative analysis procedures;

7. Must be able to perform physical activities associated with job responsibilities; e.g. climb multiple stairs, scaffold, and ladders, withstand high heat and humidity conditions, carry sampling equipment and instrumentation;

8. Must be able to support Emergency Plan activity requirements (e.g. Dose Assessor) reporting in accordance with applicable response time frames;

9. Must satisfactorily progress through and/or complete prescribed training courses required by the Company or any regulatory agency;

10. Must have the ability to receive, interpret, and pass on orders and instructions in a manner that will maintain harmony and safety and obtain cooperation and satisfactory work results from employees assigned to the work.

11. Must remain in the chemistry unit for a minimum of two years following completion of technician qualifications.
