Job Description
Norfolk Southern’s Product Owners are responsible for guiding the development and management of technology products throughout their lifecycles. A Senior Product Owner is an experienced position responsible for leading the delivery of 1-2 products.
Senior Product Owners work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, design, operations, marketing, and sales, to ensure the successful creation and launch of a product. Senior Product Owners conduct market research, define product strategy, gather requirements, prioritize features, and collaborate with the development team to oversee the product's implementation. They also monitor the product's performance, gather user feedback, and make data-driven decisions to improve its functionality and user experience. Ultimately, a Senior Product Owner ensures that what is being created is worthwhile in terms of the time, money, and energy expended, ensuring that the product or service meets both user needs and business goals.
Norfolk Southern’s Product Management discipline sits at the intersection of business, data, design, engineering, security, operations, support, and marketing. Senior Product Owners have a deep understanding and deep respect for each of these disciplines. They serve as the connective tissue that brings together strategic business goals, human-centered design, future-forward engineering, streamlined operations, and best-in-class support.
A Senior Product Owner’s responsibility can range from conceiving of new software applications built from the ground up, making incremental improvements to existing applications, or carefully sunsetting older applications without disrupting day-to-day functioning. Most Senior Product Owners will be doing all three at any given time. Many of these software applications will serve internal users at Norfolk Southern, while other applications will be used by people external to Norfolk Southern (partners, vendors, clients, consumers, etc.).
The ideal candidate will have deep concern with the quality of products developed by the team, never settling for “it’s good enough” or “it gets the job done” or “it’s just how it’s always worked”. Experience building products in an operations environment (Transportation, Industrials, etc.) will be an asset.
