About the role

Description

We are seeking an Assistant Director, Data Solutions that will be part of the Data Office for Liberty Mutual's US Retail Markets. In this role, you will design, prototype, and deliver high‑impact data solutions that enable the enterprise to make better decisions. Working at a senior level, you’ll lead complex technical work, mentor others, and partner with business stakeholders and IT to turn ambiguous problems into scalable data products and proven platforms.

Why this role matters: Your technical leadership will help move early concepts into production-grade systems that are secure, governed, and built for long-term scale. You’ll shape data strategy, drive customer-focused metrics, and influence how the organization uses data to create value.

What you’ll do:

  • Independently prototype and develop complex data solutions and proofs of concept that meet business needs.
  • Translate vague ideas or problems into a clear data product strategy and roadmap.
  • Design iterative solutions and perform testing to ensure technical and functional specifications are met.
  • Build for scale: assess prototype viability and collaborate with IT to productionize and support robust systems.
  • Champion data quality, metadata, lineage, business definitions, compliance, and data security across projects.
  • Leverage advanced knowledge of multiple coding languages to implement solutions and troubleshoot multi‑tier, multi‑platform environments.
  • Create self-service data experiences, focusing on visualization, user experience, and enabling business users.
  • Define and prioritize efforts based on customer value and measurable business metrics.
  • Act as a technical leader and mentor; provide advice to more junior team members and other functional areas.
  • Use Agile techniques to set expectations and deliverables for high‑complexity work.

What success looks like:

  • Proofs of concept that move quickly and reliably into production with clear scalability plans.
  • Data products that enable business stakeholders to self-serve insights and consistently use agreed metrics.
  • A stronger, more governed data platform with measurable improvements in data quality, lineage, and security.
  • A team that’s growing technical capability through your mentorship and leadership.

What we’re looking for (skills and experience):

  • Extensive hands-on experience designing and delivering complex data solutions and prototypes.
  • Advanced programming skills across multiple languages and tools relevant to data engineering and analytics, specifically SAS, SQL, Python and Snowflake.
  • Deep understanding of BI tools, visualization, and user experience best practices.
  • Proven experience with metadata, lineage, governance, compliance, and data security principles.
  • Comfortable working across business and IT boundaries to productionize and scale systems.
  • Strong Agile experience, including planning, delivering, and setting expectations for complex deliverables.
  • Ability to influence strategy and priorities, and to mentor and guide junior staff.

Additional info:

  • This role could be hired at a Consultant or Assistant Director level, depending on skills and experience.
  • This role may have in-office requirements dependent upon candidate location.

If you’re excited about building data products that scale and guiding teams through complex technical challenges, we’d love to hear from you.

Qualifications

  • Strong written and oral communication skills required.
  • Bachelor`s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline preferred.
  • Master`s in same or related disciplines strongly preferred.
  • 5-7+ years experience in coding for data management, data warehousing, or other data environments, including scripting languages (SQL, SAS, Python, Snowflake).
  • 5-7+ years experience as developer with top quadrant Business Intelligence tools, PowerBI, Tableau, MicroStrategy.
