The Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) is offering a 12-week Law Clerk Internship in our Administrative Prosecution Unit. The unit aims to provide efficient and fair hearings, resolve disputes effectively, and enforce the law equitably. It handles contested case hearings, including scheduling, document preparation, motions, case presentation, and record compilation for appeals. The unit impacts individuals, employers, industries, and the public. It prosecutes cases in civil rights law, wage and hour law, and certain licensed occupations like farm, forest, and construction labor contractors. These activities support the agency's mission of achieving compliance through regulation and enforcement. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in the public sector while contributing to BOLI's mission.

What You Will Be Doing

Key Responsibilities:

With the guidance of an Administrative Prosecutor the Law Clerk Intern will:

  • Review, evaluate, and prepare cases to be presented at contested case hearings

  • Draft charging documents and case summaries

  • Assemble evidence and subpoenas witnesses

  • Conduct legal research; and draft, file, and respond to motions, discovery requests, and other procedural matters

  • Present cases at contested case hearings and advocate the agency’s position

  • Summarize legal issues represented in the case, and apply statutes, rules, and previous final orders

  • Present evidence and examine and cross-examine witnesses at hearings

  • Participate in meetings and trainings

What we are looking for and qualifications

  • Law students with a bachelor’s degree and at least one year of law school completed by the beginning of summer 2024

  • Experience working successfully with people from diverse backgrounds and abilities

  • Interest in a career in public service and helping Oregonians

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal research tools

  • People who value diversity and will contribute to our inclusive workplace culture

  • Legal internships or coursework related to labor law, civil rights, or employment law is a plus
