Job Purpose:
- The Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance at Sweet Briar Institute is responsible for delivering high-quality education in dance, fostering a dynamic and engaging learning environment, and contributing to the academic and cultural life of the institution. The role involves teaching undergraduate students, developing curriculum, and participating in departmental activities to promote the growth of the dance program.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach a range of dance courses, including technique, choreography, and dance theory, to undergraduate students.
- Develop and implement innovative curriculum that meets the educational standards and goals of the dance department.
- Mentor and advise students on academic and career paths in dance.
- Engage in scholarly activities and research to contribute to the field of dance.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to organize performances, workshops, and other events that enhance the visibility and impact of the dance program.
- Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to the development of departmental policies and initiatives.
- Maintain a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of teaching and departmental activities.
Qualifications
Required Education:
- Doctorate degree in Dance or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
Required Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in teaching dance at the college or university level.
- Proven track record of scholarly research and/or creative work in the field of dance.
- Experience in curriculum development and academic advising within a higher education setting.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with students, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to teach a range of dance styles and techniques, including contemporary and classical forms.
- Proficiency in integrating technology and innovative teaching methods into dance education.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse learning environment.
- Capability to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects and initiatives within the academic community.
